As the founder of the Mastery Academy of Chinese Metaphysics which teaches the skills of feng shui, ba zi, qi men dun jia and mian xiang, alongside other traditional tools, Dato’ Joey Yap has been spreading the benefits of creating positive energy homes for over 20 years.
He has also consulted on public developments like Publika Malaysia, Aurora Melbourne and Battersea London.

1. Understand what classical feng shui actually is
“There have been too many times clients ask me questions like ‘should I paint my door red?’ or ‘where should I place this statue?’,” says Dato’ Yap.
“Classical feng shui has nothing to do with superstitions, rumours or lucky charms. It is an ancient science that relies on calculations to manipulate the flow of Qi in the home so that all of the occupants’ potential will be enhanced in the area – romance, business or academics –that they want to excel in.
“So, my main areas of concern when doing a feng shui consultation is to look at the direction and location of the rooms in the home, not the colours, charms or myths.”

2. You must know what you want improved
Another important aspect to sort out before the consultation, says Dato’ Yap, is what areas you need to fix. Be specific, not just a general ‘overall improvement in life’.
“If a client comes to me for help, I need to know which area they need help for. It could be health, relationships, finances, academics, business or even something trivial.”

“Feng shui isn’t a cure-all. It’s not a miracle drug either. What it can do is to improve your potential in areas which you need help in.
“If you know what you want to improve, then feng shui can help to grow your potential in that area.”

3. It takes a full day to conduct a feng shui consultation
“If you ever ask for a feng shui consultation, be prepared to spend the entire day on it,” says Dato’ Yap.
“It’s not just entering the house and changing a few doodads here and there; the consultant always has to start by analysing the exterior and the surroundings of the home.”
After the exterior is analysed, the feng shui consultant will need to work on the interior, which will also take time explains Dato’ Yap.

“The consultant has to do calculations and figure out solutions to the problems encountered by the client.
A good consultant will also walk the client through step-by-step to understand the reasoning behind the suggestions, and how these suggestions can benefit the client,” he explains.

“Again, this is not a simple 10-minute affair, instead, it’s going to be a lengthy meeting where the consultant takes the time to go through the entire process and answer any questions or dilemmas.”
