Whether you want to add clever storage, turn a cold-looking bedroom into a cosy sanctuary, or even incorporate unexpected luxury into your space, designers on Houzz have come up with some ingenious solutions. Read on to see how these once neglected bedrooms have been transformed into functional, cosy and luxurious havens.
The team designed a wall of joinery behind the bed, with more along the small area to the side. “There are fold-down bedside tables, a bit like the tables on a train, with plug sockets inside,” designer Adam Knight says.
As well as being practical, the cabinetry embraces the diminutive size of the room and makes it feel enclosed. “I think sometimes, with a small space, the smaller it is, the cosier it feels,” he says.

2. The cosy transformation
Just like in the previous example, the designers of this once boring bedroom decided to bring a cosy feel into the space.
The owners asked Catherine Connacher of Blaven Interiors to create a bedroom that felt like a sanctuary, mixing in both Edwardian and contemporary elements.
To really nail the design, Catherine talked to her client about going for a dark scheme. “She already had quite a lot of paint samples, but they weren’t as dark as the colour we eventually went with,” Catherine says. “She needed a bit of encouragement to be bolder.”

“During the consultation, I brought my paint swatches and we looked at different shades of green, and we both loved this one,” Catherine says.
She kept the rich wood joinery in place to complement the deep green walls, then added artwork, textiles and accessories to give the space more depth.
To lift the darker shades, Catherine incorporated plenty of lighter features, such as the paler upper walls and ceiling, the bed linen and the armchair. “Keeping all these light meant the room didn’t feel too cave-like,” she says.

3. The hidden walk-in wardrobe transformation
This large bedroom wasn’t meeting its full potential before the owners called in the team at LMK Studio, but some clever space planning totally transformed it.
The first thing the designers did was turn the bed 90 degrees, so the owners could enjoy the leafy view, but rather than positioning it against the existing wall, they pulled it forwards and added a headboard that doubles as a divider.

4. The storage-maxing transformation
While the storage behind this bed felt dated, it was also extremely useful. So designer Angela Colley of GeorgieRose Interior Design needed to ensure the room didn’t lose its functionality if she removed the cabinets.

…a wall of wardrobes along the opposite wall instead. The new cabinets look contemporary and sleek, and have actually added more stowaway room. “In the end, we almost doubled the storage space, as we did it in a better way,” Angela says.

5. The one room into two transformation
The new design for this large room features a partition similar to that in example 3, but this time the division is much more substantial.
The wall of joinery seen here was taken out and the bed moved back to the wall, allowing Josephine Lecoufle-Vinet of JLV Design to add a false wall to divide the room in two.

The bed now sits opposite the new partition, and behind this false wall is a separate space…
…which is large enough for two sides of cabinetry and even a vanity area. Hanging rails, drawers and open shelves give the owners plenty of options for storage.
“We measured everything, all the owners’ shoes and clothes – [one of the two] has quite a large collection of trainers – so we could create space for it all,” she says.

6. The luxurious bath transformation
There are lots of ways to make use of a bay window, including tucking a dressing table and gym equipment into the space, as the owners of this bedroom had done previously.
However, Sarah Goldstone of Goldstone Interiors came up with an idea that was much more luxurious.

However, Sarah Goldstone of Goldstone Interiors came up with an idea that was much more luxurious.
Sarah created a bathing area with a view. As the windows aren’t overlooked and are surrounded by trees, it’s the perfect spot for the owner to relax while being surrounded by greenery.
To ensure the area was practical, she covered the floor with tiles and added a freestanding towel rail beside the bath.

7. The power of colour transformation
It’s amazing what a difference colour can make to a space, and here’s a great example. When Natasha Burton of NB Interiors UK was hired to update this bedroom suite, the scheme made the north-east-facing room feel cold.
Instead, she went for a warmer palette.

Instead, she went for a warmer palette.
Natasha chose corals, sage green and peachy tones for the new scheme.
The effect is quite dramatic, with the warm hues giving the room a much more cosy and welcoming feel.
While Natasha managed to retain the overall layout of the room, her careful consideration of colour, texture and accessories has completely revived the space.

In this bedroom, the team at Nefarious Design were slightly limited by the size of the space. While it made sense to put the bed against the back wall, that didn’t leave much room for storage.
The solution? To take inspiration from cabin beds and sleeper trains.
