Shere Kitchens
5. Embrace a soothing colour palette
Kitchens can be busy spaces with lots of footfall, so choosing a soothing colour palette inspired by nature can help introduce a sense of calm.

This scheme by Shere Kitchens is consistently popular on Houzz and it showcases how to do this beautifully. The sage green on the island unit references the outside world, while the floor-to-ceiling cupboards in soft white are gently unobtrusive and keep clutter out of sight.

A few carefully chosen natural accessories, such as the wooden display shelf, earthenware vase and woven basket, bring in tactile natural elements without overpowering the scheme.

4. Maximise storage
If you like the idea of a sleek and contemporary scheme, take inspiration from this design by LMK Studio. The black-on-black island unit with handleless doors makes a strong style statement, while the floor-to-ceiling wall units in rough-sawn oak add warmth and bring in a tactile contrast.

They key to maintaining the contemporary feel of this design is factoring in plenty of storage to ensure everything has a place and clutter doesn’t have a chance to build up. Try taking cupboards right to the ceiling and choosing a deep island unit with cupboard space on both sides.

3. Bring in personality with a bespoke piece
The standout feature in this kitchen by Bradley Van Der Straeten is the oak island, which has a vintage feel thanks to its thin legs, reeded glass and marble top.

Although it looks like an antique piece, it was actually made bespoke by the project’s joiners and designed carefully to suit the owner’s needs. The glass-front compartments seen here are pull-out drawers for practicality.

The island is also thoughtfully positioned so the homeowner can face the garden as they work. “The fridge, oven and sink are in one line and the working triangle is more about the pantry and worktop than the appliances,” designer George Bradley says. “It rotates a common layout – and it’s one we’ve come back to.”

2. Carve out a seating area
This compact kitchen is a great example of how to squeeze a lot of functionality into a small space without compromising on design.

By placing a generous bench seat under the window and along the adjoining wall, Jo Llogarajah of Studio JKL has created a lounge area at the end of the run of kitchen cabinets, giving the family space to work and relax without getting in each other’s way.

A fireplace tucked into the wall helps to create the feel of a cosy seating nook at the end of the kitchen.

Q Design House
1. Have a hardworking island
The island at the heart of this family kitchen design by Q Design House anchors the whole scheme, serving as a sociable gathering area as well as providing valuable worktop space.

A sink has been positioned in the island directly opposite the hob for practicality, while seating has been placed opposite, allowing for a flow of conversation between family members during meal prep.

The oak chosen for the island unit acts as a warm contrast to the green cabinets. “It also ties in nicely with the dining table [behind], which was an existing piece,” designer Josie Lywood says.
