3D Kitchen Designs Celebrate Disney Magic
Design dreams come true in three virtual kitchens inspired by ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Toy Story’
Disney’s The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Toy Story are celebrating major anniversaries this year and next. To mark the occasions, Houzz channelled the spirit of each classic animated film with designs for an open-plan kitchen-diner, plus an adjoining hallway and walk-in pantry, all created with the Houzz Pro 3D Floor Planner – a tool available to Houzz Pro subscribers.
“Creating these spaces was like bringing a cherished childhood memory to life,” Houzz designer Madison Holmlund says. “Every detail, from the colour palette to the furniture, was chosen to reflect the timeless charm of a few of Disney’s most celebrated films, while the Houzz Pro 3D Floor Planner made it easy to create three distinct designs for the same room.”

2. ‘The Lion King’
Designers can say, “Hakuna matata! No worries!” when a homeowner wants to see different ideas for the same kitchen, thanks to the 3D Floor Planner. They merely need to duplicate a plan’s basic layout and then choose new products, materials and finishes from the software’s huge built-in selection.
This organic, modern-style kitchen-diner, for example, shares an overall layout with Ariel and Eric’s kitchen, but the colours, finishes and accents echo the earthy tones and natural textures of Simba’s kingdom in the 1994 film, The Lion King.
“In designing the Lion King floor plan, I wanted to pull in texture and colour reminiscent of an African safari while keeping the overall feel luxurious and upscale,” Madison says. “Warm woods, brushed brass and oil-rubbed bronze appliances and fixtures, woven banana fibre dining chairs and a lively green cabinet colour (Benjamin Moore’s Kennebunkport Green) come together to create an earthy, inviting space.”
The worktops are cream-coloured natural stone, the dining room walls are covered in zebra-like Black Deco Fountain wallpaper, and the flooring is custom 7.5cm-wide white oak floorboards. An oversize hammered-metal cooker hood in a warm coppery tone is a standout feature in the kitchen, much like Pride Rock towers over Pride Lands in the animated film.
Choose the Dollhouse or Walkthrough view in the floor plan, then use the Pan, Move and Rotate tools to visit the bright and airy hallway and the walk-in pantry. The latter features palm wallpaper and an ode to Mufasa at its entrance.

3. ‘Toy Story’
A third version of the same open-plan kitchen-diner captures the whimsy and playfulness of a Disney classic celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025: Toy Story.
The perimeter cabinetry is painted in Benjamin Moore’s bold Patriot Blue and topped with a cream marble worktop with gold veining. The contrasting island unit and cooker hood are white oak, and the flooring is 12.5cm-wide laminate floorboards in Coffee Hackberry. The woods’ rusticity nods to Woody’s cowboy roots, as do the Western prints in the dining area and walk-in pantry.
A sideboard in the dining area offers plenty of toy storage, while, beneath the glass-topped table, a round rug calls to mind Woody’s horse, Bullseye. Click on the Dollhouse view in the floor plan to spin around in the dining area and see a cosy reading nook with Woody’s cowboy hat hanging on the wall.
Buzz Lightyear’s influence is evident in the design, too. “I just love the sparkle the brass star sconces bring to the dining area,” Madison says. “I also like that they’re a subtle nod to Buzz and the iconic line, ‘To infinity and beyond!’ from the movies.”
Speaking of unlimited possibilities, these Disney-inspired kitchens were created from scratch. But if you’re renovating an existing space, your designer or contractor can use the Houzz Pro app on their phone or tablet to scan the room and create a virtual model as a starting point for the new design. Pros then can adjust floor plans, share ideas and select products within the software.

If The Little Mermaid’s Ariel and Prince Eric hired a designer to create their “happily ever after” dream home, it might include an open-plan kitchen-diner like this one. The cooking area’s three walls of cabinetry and island offer plenty of prep surface and storage space for “dinglehoppers” (aka forks).
Drawing colour and thematic inspiration from the 1989 film, Madison washed the room in soft and serene coastal style. She selected a watery grey paint colour with blue-green undertones (Benjamin Moore’s Sea Star) for the kitchen cabinetry and paired it with a lighter blue-green-grey on the walls (Benjamin Moore’s Smoke) and a coordinating stacked metro tile splashback.
A cream marble worktop with gold veining, a round white pedestal table and creamy white curtains and bar stools resemble the colour of sea foam. A circular braided-seagrass rug, rattan dining chairs, a wicker pendant light in the dining area and 15cm-wide white oak floorboards add beachy texture and tones. Brushed brass hardware and other golden accents, meanwhile, are reminiscent of sunshine glittering on the waves.
Madison’s favourite element, though, is the Moonlight Pearls wallpaper in the dining area. “It truly does make me feel as if I’m in a luxurious underwater fantasy world,” she says.
To see the floor plan in both 2D and 3D, click the link. Then you can use the Pan, Rotate and Zoom tools in the Dollhouse and life-size Walkthrough views to get an overview of the space, as well as an up-close look at its textures, colours and materials. This photorealistic image, like the other two in this story, was created by taking a “snapshot” while in Walkthrough mode.
Clicking around the plan’s Dollhouse and Walkthrough views offers a sense of how the Room Planner tool can help design and renovation professionals and their clients visualise the layout and flow between rooms – and even to outdoor spaces. In all of these projects, for example, you’ll be able to see more of the dining rooms and visit the adjoining hallways and walk-in pantries, each of which is decorated with coordinating finishes and accents. Keep an eye out for a mermaid painting while exploring this particular space.
