The RHS predicts a continued rise in the popularity of gravel gardens this year and designers on Houzz are sharing more and more projects featuring the material.

Perhaps the most renowned example in the country is Beth Chatto’s Gravel Garden in Essex. The garden, which is teeming with hot weather-resilient plants, is famous not only for its gravelly aesthetic, but also for never being watered and having no irrigation system, despite its poor-quality soil (it began life as a car park) and being situated in one of the driest parts of the country.
