This is so exciting! I've just commissioned a landscaper to transform my tiny brick-walled Tyneside yard. They're not starting til September so I have plenty of time to get inspired. They're just doing the hard landscaping, patio and planting pockets, and providing a planting plan, but I'm already imagining it looking like some of these photos. I'm interested in the cost of plants. I'd like some trees and climbing things plus a few showstoppers. How far will £500 go?

I think you can transform a patio with lots of pots and solar lights - I have found that cheap solar lights are just as good as expensive ones now that the technology has improved. Also I always have a flowering plant on my patio table - looks inviting.
