Searches on Houzz reveal that Japanese design influences have quietly been gaining popularity, and the idea of the small interior courtyard very much falls into this category. In a hectic world, courtyards offer the stillness and peace of an enclosed space, deliver extra light to darker areas of the house, aid cross-ventilation, and bring greenery into the heart of the home.

Side-return extensions in particular lend themselves to these little havens, with the area closest to the house being left open to the sky, but they can be incorporated into other projects, too. Take a look at these designs to see whether any could work for you.
