Alyper: As you said not everyone has the luxury of a large garden with rolling meadows and lawns. We do the best with what we have and as long as it works for us and the local wild animals (as opposed to us 'tame' ones) then it shouldn't matter. I too have a concrete garden but many many pots. Gardens used to mean plants but some you see seem devoid of anything resembling life which is a shame.

I am so inspired by these photos, as we have a small urban garden where grass isn't practical. We currently have a small patch of lawn with thin beds on the sides, but my goal is to widen the beds, leaving just a stone path down the middle (something like the Acres Wild garden above). I look forward to being able to grow veg in raised beds and sit amongst the flowers and trees, without having to maintain a lawn. When I look at these gardens I see lots of biodiversity and potential wildlife habitats!

Ann Howell, I have loads of flowers growing in my gravel path - all self-sown with the help of birds - including borage (lovely blue flowers) and Californian poppies (vibrant orange), while lilies of the valley grow between old paving stones. I know I 'should' dig them out, but quite like the natural messiness!
