12 Storage Solutions for Bedrooms You’ll Love

Think beyond wardrobes and chests of drawers. These beautiful rooms have storage that’s smart, innovative and good-looking, too

Houzz UK Contributor. I have been an interiors journalist since 1995, writing several books on design and numerous features for glossy homes mags over the years. For Houzz, I cover decorating ideas and trends and interview designers and professionals for their insights. My favourite pieces to write, though, are Houzz Tours, as I love exploring and learning about real homes. Call me curious — or nosy!

Bedrooms need to feel peaceful and relaxing, so good storage is essential to remove any distracting clutter. Most of us opt for a mix of hanging space and shelves or drawers, either built into a wardrobe or in a traditional chest of drawers, but other, more imaginative storage solutions are available.

From bespoke fitted wardrobes to humble second-hand finds, ingenious under-bed ideas to the humble hook, there’s a world of space-saving, life-enhancing bedroom storage out there. Sweet dreams are made of these…

Get busy above the bed
If all you have above your bed is fresh air and empty wall space, you’re missing a trick. This colourful bedroom demonstrates the storage potential of over-bed space, and is home to sleek units containing perfectly organised shoes.

Upcycle with style
Bedroom furniture doesn’t have to be bespoke or brand-new to function beautifully. Witness this simple wooden crate, flipped on its end and doing sterling work as a bedside unit and home for books. We salute it!

Take it higher
Vertical space is often underused, but the wall space above head height can be redesigned as valuable storage. You’ll need a ladder to access it, but this bedroom shows how stylish a floor-to-ceiling system can look.

See clearly now
Fitting glass into the doors of bedroom storage can help it to cut a less imposing figure in the room. There’s also the added advantage of being able to see the items inside, so you can enjoy your things when you’re not wearing them, and quickly locate pieces when needed.

Use every scrap of space
This small double bedroom is full of tricky angles and slopes, but that hasn’t stood in the way of storage. Mini shelves, hanging rails, bookcases and racks have been cut to fit the available space. It means that a great deal of storage has been squeezed from a compact area.
Enjoy an enhanced shelf life
Moving a bed to a central location in a room and creating a headboard-style wall behind it creates the opportunity to build in some nifty shelves. These are beautifully lit, too, which adds a classy touch. Clothes, meanwhile, are stored in super-discreet, built-in wardrobes along one wall.

Combine storage styles
Here’s a tasty feast of storage, just right for a child or teen’s room. In a relatively compact area, this room contains wardrobes, open shelves, under-bed storage and cupboards that wrap around the corner and make use of space above the bed.

Respect is also due for the bold use of bright yellow, adding energy to a super-practical scheme.

Think under the bed
Instead of exploiting space above the bed, create a raised platform for it and build in lots of storage below. As this picture demonstrates, this idea works particularly well in a room with a lofty ceiling.

Keep it country
Sleek, bespoke wardrobes are practical, but if it’s country charm you’re after, go freestanding. Here, a handsome vintage unit, complete with chicken-wire doors, packs lots of warm character alongside the abundant storage space.

Make it minimal
Even clutter-bunnies can appreciate the elegance of this built-in storage, which is designed as a continuous run, containing drawer and desk space, as well as spacious wardrobes. Push-catch doors mean no knobs or handles are required, making it clean, sleek bedroom storage at its best.

Create a display
A bookcase or open shelves work well for the tidy minded — messy-pups will prefer cupboard doors on bedroom storage, so the disorganised riot of stuff inside is hidden neatly away.

There’s nothing flash about this storage — it’s just a simple bookcase — but with careful styling it becomes a beautiful display as well as a handy home for shoes and more.

Hang it all
No feature on bedroom storage would be complete with celebrating the joys of the humble hook. Hooks don’t have the hide-it-all capacity of a run of built-in wardrobes, but look how beautifully they can order a jewellery collection.
