Living room
Mix and match some favorites, try out different ways of organizing them and use the above ideas as a guide to help you — but never as hard-and-fast rules. Ultimately, a sense of welcome and personality is most important to your mantel, so have fun. Your fireplace is meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, so let your mantel style reflect that.
Mix and Match Ultimately, one of the best ways to decorate your mantel with personality and interest is to use items that add different shapes, tones and textures. By mixing framed pieces with collectibles, statuettes and the like, you create a sense of depth and variety, and tell a little personal story.
How to arrange art above a fireplace mantel. Cut life-size stand-ins for each frame out of paper, then tape them up to figure out a composition that looks right before you commit to putting nail holes in your wall. Try lining all the pieces up as much as possible, then shifting some a few inches to one side.
A pyramid can be used to great success in ways that aren’t entirely obvious. In this example, if you were to draw a triangle running from the center of the frame to the ends of the mantel, you would notice that the top of the bouquet hits right along the right edge of this triangle. The triangle here is much less filled in and obvious than the one in the previous image, but picturing where its line would fall helps in positioning the major pieces in a way that appears balanced.
Pyramid Approach When clustering several small items on a fireplace mantel, it helps to have some structure to guide you. One idea to try is a loose pyramid or triangle. By putting the tallest or largest object in the center and building the smaller items out from there, you develop a sense of symmetry even if the objects aren’t truly symmetrical. Layering items in front of one another builds out your pyramid and gives lots of dynamic energy to the composition. Shift around the pieces until the composition feels just right, but don’t get too fussy — asymmetry isn’t meant to be perfect.
The height of the piece can vary, although it’s generally best to leave a few inches of breathing room. For a tall piece, hang it centered on the wall between the mantel and ceiling, as shown in the previous image, or lean it casually against the wall right on the mantel. For a short piece, give it 2 to 4 inches of space above the mantel, as shown here.
Alignment In rooms with multiple focal points, it can give the room an even stronger sense of order to align the biggest focal points along one axis. Here, the sofas face toward an imaginary centerline of the room, and the chandelier and fireplace both sit on that same centerline. Look back to the entryway photo with the blue door. The red rug is aligned with the door, even though the door is technically a little off-center in the wall. Keeping these dramatic elements along one axis makes them feel connected instead of competitive.

Consider conversational distances. No matter how big your living room, there’s a limit to how large a seating group can be and still make sense for intimate conversation and cozy gatherings. A good distance between seats to facilitate conversation is about 8 feet, meaning if you have several sofas or a sofa and side chairs, the seating area should have a diameter of 8 feet, or 4 feet out from the center. A huge, 12-seat sectional sofa may look great and be perfect for a party, but if you’re looking to create a cozy living room, it’s usually best to use fewer, smaller seating pieces and push them a little closer together.
Sectional + Two Chairs Homeowners’ request: A modern, eclectic and warm space. “This is a midcentury home, and the clients did not want a complete midcentury interior,” designer Amy Friedberg says. “Instead, they wanted an interior that captured the midcentury aesthetic, as well as one that reflected their unique heritages, travels and personalities.” Conversation starters: A sectional, two midcentury-style armchairs and additional seating areas. “This room was designed for clients that like to entertain,” Friedberg says. “They wanted a comfortable space for intimate conversation, for reading and to maximize and enjoy their view. We were able to accomplish these objectives by creating smaller spaces within the larger space that clearly suggest their purpose. In this image, you can see in the left-hand corner a Herman Miller Eames chair placed for a relaxing solo read. To the right of the fireplace exist a small table and chairs. Here someone can read and write with a cup of coffee. The main sitting area in the center of the living room was intimately arranged to help promote conversation. We provided lots of comfy seating and a softly shaped round cocktail table. Designer tip. “...

Here's a more modern example of white brick fireplace. I absolutely love this — it's modern yet earthy, and I like the way the top ledge extends over to the shelving on the left, making it more asymmetrical. This design really complements the minimal black-and-white interior.
Designer secret. “Typically we layer windows with window treatments,” Mackie says. “On this project we all agreed that the raw natural light drenching the space made such an impact on the experience of the room. The other key feature is orienting seating in a circular fashion for a social space. Circles for conversation create memorable moments.”
Designer tip. “We used two different yet complementary sofas in this space to give it a more casual vibe,” Greig says. “The trick is to select sofas with complementary but not matching shapes. Both styles in this space have clean, classic lines — think square arms, slimmer silhouettes, minimal detailing — but the gray sofa features a gorgeous wooden base and legs, while the beige love seat features a simple, tailored slipcover.”
Designer tip. “I often like to paint the ceiling, walls and trim one color to disguise lower ceilings,” Gargano says. “I think this worked really well to freshen the space up and also allow for a nice backdrop for our light taupe cabinets in the kitchen. The inverse — taupe walls and white cabinets — felt too traditional.”
Designer tip. “People tend to want to place their sofas right against the wall,” Lovett says. “I always try to float the sofa a bit and give the sofa some breathing room. Here, we didn’t have floor outlets or any eye-level lighting. Incorporating table lamps allows for mood lighting and ambiance. We placed a console behind the sofa to bring in large-scale lamps, which also helped fill in the negative space between the sofa and the bottom of the windows.”
A few ideas for your spare corner: Install a window seat, make a small conversation group with a pair of slipper chairs or create a mini library with floor-to-ceiling shelves and a single fabulous armchair.
Define Zones With a Console Table Another option for sectioning off parts of a large living room is floating your sofa in the middle of the room and placing a console table behind it.
In a really large living room, you may wish to create two full seating areas. Mark the separation while keeping the flow between the two zones with furniture you can easily see over: a daybed, bench or chaise is a good option.
