Previous driveway gravel was repurposed for side yard path
Paths, Patio, Driveway - If using gravel and pavers, can unite common elements of gravel driveway and patio with bluestone pavers In this California habitat garden, the pathway was made of gravel and bluestone flagstones set into sand over compacted base rock. The cool tones of the stone pick up the blue-violet hues of native Cleveland sage (Salvia clevelandii, zones 8 to 11) and foothill penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus, zones 6 to 10). The depth of the path area and base rock needed varies by region and specific site. “I find that there is not a lot of knowledge about how deeply [gravel] should be laid,” Edger says. “Here in California, I like a 3- to 4-inch layer of base rock and a thin layer of the gravel. It only needs to be slightly deeper than its own diameter for it to provide cover and be a firm surface.”
Add Width With Winding Paths Make small gardens seem longer by adding a curved or zigzag path, rather than just employing a straight, central pathway. This will give the impression that the garden is wider, as the eye will move from side to side rather than straight up the middle to the rear of the garden.

PRO Le jardinet An Alluring StrollPlantings and pathway blend easily in this picture-perfect scene. One is naturally drawn to the partially obscured stacked stone sculpture yet also wants to linger on this delightful meandering path. The color palette focuses on shades of purple provided by 'Beni Otake' Japanese maple (Acer palmatum 'Beni Otake') and 'Velvet Cloak' smokebush (Cotinus coggygria 'Velvet Cloak').The chartreuse foliage of 'Mellow Yellow' spirea (Spiraea thunbergii 'Ogon'), 'Golden Spirit' smokebush (Cotinus coggygria 'Golden Spirit') and Bowles' golden sedge (Carex elata 'Aurea') adds high contrast, taking center stage.Rhododendrons add rich magenta accents, while black mondo grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens') adds deeper black notes.Key plants and colors are repeated on alternate sides of the pathway, luring you deeper and deeper into the dappled glade.

Contemporary Landscape by Bliss Garden Design Bliss Garden Design SaveEmail Cobbles or Setts The small size of cobbles and setts makes them ideal for curved paths like this one, as well as edging and decorative details in gardens. Most cobbles and setts are made from concrete, granite or bluestone, ensuring their durability and hardness. They’re used mainly in informal country or cottage gardens, but also suit courtyards. Pros: Cobbles and setts are hard-wearing, slip-resistant, versatile and easy to remove if damaged when laid on sand. Cons: Professional skill is needed for installation in large areas.
