CARY/OLIVER PROPOSED SIDE/BACK YARD
These are what we discussed the other day as a good option for on both sides of your door. I can see these as well as a top piece that would fit beneath the upper window trim. If you create an expanded landing surface (flagstone or paver) outside the sidedoor with a radius, you could mirror the radius on this top header. A local welder could create these for you. They could be painted or allowed to rust out. A nice coordination of metal could be had for cohesiveness...in the front fence trellis, the door trellis surround and perhaps in the accent panel near patio.......I love the more organic look of steel patina!!! Let me know!
This is metal art panels created by Gina Nash, Portland Artist. This example shows how you can use laser-cut metal for screening. I can imagine this sort of treatment in the front inside of the trellis you have built into the front fence to fill the space there; I can also imaging a long, more narrow top panel on top of the accent fence panel along patio.
As far as large shrubs go, this is an elderberry called Black Lace. Deciduous. Wine colored foliage. Can get pretty tall. Could also be a candidate for the long narrow sunny bed in the back.

Does the shrub in the back corner near the patio produce these flowers? This is a Deutzia.
