SY: Calacatta penny rounds marble mosaic tile - an alternative to the marble flower mosaic. I feel as if I like this better with a pattern on the floor, even if it's just a hex, and a marbled countertop. Because of your budget & also the higher maintenance of marble, I'd keep this just in the back of your niche above your sink. RW: not a fan of this one SY: really!? You love similar in the inspo imagery below, lol. Ok, will go with flower. :)
SY: the Quartz that looks like marble is expensive. But lovely. And much lower maintenance than real marble. This is Caesarstone Statuario Maximus. You will want to get samples to match all your whites, and check overall slab images to see the graining. And of course compare cost and local availability. RW: like
SY: come on you can't dislike all wood! it warms things up! maybe just on your couple of shelves and maybe on a freestanding island cart? This is probably natural oak which would be lovely and would tie to the (unnatural) oak in the dining and living (lol). RW: Hahaha but I wanna hate all wood. This super light wood in this pic for the cookbooks I can totally live with.
Let's talk pulls! Knobs, pulls, cups, finger pulls, integrated cutouts, integrated rails... what do you like or not like? Or do you know/care? :) I can get behind all kinds of options, and recommend what I think too in terms of shape and size and finish, but I want to know before I do what's in your head! - RW: the only part of the current kitchen I don’t hate is the pulls. I like simple and basic nothing to adorned. Other than that I’m flexible.
SY: well this is bright and gorgeous. do you like these floors? overall feel? elements of black (if not exactly as shown here)? I adore this look for your kitchen and would love to use it as primary inspiration if it were just up to me - though I really do want to see some images of the other adjacent spaces to remind me of the context. :) Your backsplash would go quieter/white in this scheme - maybe a white on white pattern or just wrap the countertop quartz up the wall. Do you keep indoor plants alive? RW: do keep indoor plants alive thanks to greg but all are upstairs. Like this backsplash.
SY: the floor tile from that last image - perhaps not in black and white. I really like the dark brown shown in the other image. Tesselle tile is customizable from their color palette! $7.69/ 8" sq tile. Note that it is cement, so 5/8" thick. Could be an issue to get level at the threshold. RW: less into this and the bold mod black and white just compared to how rest of house lives.
SY: floor. too much? It would take the more patterned backsplash idea and translate it to the floor, so backsplash would be same as countertop, or anyway, more subtle/unpatterned. RW: no this or super subtle floor I really dig this one. RW: Okay we like this and the subtle floor not big fans of the dark colored ones or big patterned ones.
SY: another cement tile floor option
SY: could be cool on the floor? Very bold of course.
SY: could be cool on the floor? Again, bold.
SY: Let's also talk backsplashes. You can take your marbly countertop right up the backsplash. Beautiful and very low maintenance (no grout lines) - but quartz is $$$. RW: love everything about this kitchen save the gold handles. Will talk flooring with greg this wknd!
SY: backsplash here is lovely, no? Not this floor, though: BLAH. RW: so like this backsplash and everything about this kitchen save the floor and open shelves
SY: like this backsplash? Click to zoom in. It's a white penny or hex tile with a subtly colored grout. So pretty. RW:like the other one or just carrying up counter.
SY: backsplash here is pretty great, no?
SY: We've done very similar to this backsplash tile before, and it's an absolute show stopper. It is marble, and not inexpensive - $35/sq ft - and not easy to install either. But you have a small space. Might be worth considering. I'll post pics of the space we put it in. PS. Full overlay shaker doors here. :) RW:this is gorgeous! ❤️❤️❤️
SY: backsplash tile at SYH project - RW:less like
SY: backsplash tile at SYH project - the zoomed out view
SY: crown along the soffit is lovely! echoing the same crown at the tops of the cabinets. Thoughts? These are also full overlay shaker cabinet doors. RW: yes love that and completes / finishes the space
SY: looking at the backsplash here. You like? Also the darker and wood elements providing some contrast and depth. RW: nice and hear you on depth. I loathe wood so l will let greg look at that one. Kid of 80s thing wood just always looks old and dirty to me.
SY: a few leading questions for you here: I like this soffit with one central fixture and 4 cans within it. You? How do you feel about this much marbling in the countertop? These are full overlay shaker cabinet doors - do you like? And check out this minimal crown at the top of the cabinets and the more decorative one where the soffit meets the ceiling - your thoughts? One thing I don't like here is how long the pulls are. RW: can deal with that much marble for sure and like rest just not that center light fixture style wise - cabinets look great! SY: agree about the light fixture. I'll find some options for you to consider.
SY: I'd probably enclose the top shelf for more useful storage, but the bottom one could be cookbooks or what have you. Or we can do a single open shelf above your microwave .... it just won't be as visible when you walk into the space, you know? Open shelves give just a little visual relief from all the cabinetry, but they have to be useful IMO! RW: yeah open only fir the cookbooks
SY: can do some cookbooks above the sink... or above the microwave ... how many do you want to store? (estimated in linear feet?). (BTW, scroll through the board to see and respond to my comments and questions on previous imagery!) RW: oh I like idea of this. Will need say 3 feet.
SY: a great example of full overlay shaker style doors RW: if saves oodles of money can def live with it
SY: Note shelf (not built in) microwave above counter level. I'm thinking to left of your fridge. Counter below would have toaster/mixer/coffee maker. RW:oh I did that SY: you did it? or you dig it? lol
SY: though super affordable, this faucet gets good reviews! https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kraus-Bolden-Spot-Free-Stainless-Steel-Chrome-1-Handle-Deck-Mount-Pull-Down-Handle-Lever-Commercial-Residential-Kitchen-Faucet/1001162900 RW: oh I like!
SY: what if we open up to dining room like this (perhaps not the arch) and replace that upper storage that you lose on the lower dining room side? RW: yes don’t lose anything if have lowers and agreed like that but not the arch.
SY: this kind of thing but with cabinets below where they're showing an overhang for stools. This way the uppers on your sink wall extend all the way to the outer edge of the peninsula countertop.
SY: your upper cabinets on your sink wall would extend like this over an open peninsula; if there is room to spare in the dining footprint, we'd pull your countertop into dining like this, but instead of stools, add lower cabinets under it. RW: oh yes. Will need to find out if load bearing (I doubt) and if can down draft (hoping). Love open feel without partial wall.
SY: I don't dislike this when you take away the partial wall between the current pass through and opening. That partial wall is what makes it looks like a weird interior window, you know? Opening it all up is way better, IMO.
SY: you could see if you could down-draft your cook top instead of having a hood over the top.
RW: Loved backsplash being the pop of color here
RW: Love most of this, just not exposed hinges, that backsplash or stove. BUT love that flexible sink faucet. SY: got it. Posting a good faucet option.
RW: Love idea of cutting into trash can IF removable cutting board for cleaning. SY: totally. That's a detail you'll need to work out with cabinet makers. And, of course, all those bells and whistles add up.
RW: Other than hated shiplap style ceiling and floor/center island this is cabinets I dig. SY: these are inset cabinets - see how the doors sit in the frames? They are more expensive. Better we go for a full overlay shaker-style door.
RW: Love all about this modern classic kitchen aka updated. SY: nice, ok! Again, inset cabinetry here, which is $$ to achieve. The window treatments do a lot for this room's overall effect - would you be open to ditching your blinds and doing something different on your window that has more intentionality?
RW: Backsplash a bit dark but like that as pop of color in white kitchen with mixed countertops. SY: got it. This is perhaps real marble, but more likely a quartz that looks like marble. That type of pattern appeals to you?
RW: Would love to be able to get wine fridge inside BUT not deal breaker as fits in our garage just fine. SY: I can get you a wine fridge, but it will steal space from other things. Since it fits elsewhere, I'll pencil it in and you can decide later if it's worth it to you. We can also get an 18" wine fridge instead of 24" standard.
RW: Gorgeous cabinets and coloring - makes me think maybe wood floors and then do all the floors (smh). SY: You like the dark bronze hardware and light marble tile and counters? What about these light fixtures?

RW: Pic from redone kitchen in our complex without passthru
RW: Pic from redone kitchen in our complex w/o passthru
RW: I wish we had space enough to do this! SY: like the wine fridge, this is a matter of priorities. But we can also get a mixer in your small appliance/coffee area.
RW: Like look of these countertops. SY: got it. very very lightly marbled.
RW: Love the fridge especially - can’t stand wasted freezer or front of fridge space for ice makers. SY: check: no door freezer for you!
RW: Kinda digging the funky backsplash. SY: we've done one like that before - I'll pin you the image. Note that these are full overlay shaker style doors - what I'd propose for you. Good? You'd prefer all light cabinetry, though, right? Not dark lowers like this?
RW: Like the bright varied tones for depth but not heavy. SY: do you mean in the backsplash? Note that again, these are full overlay shaker style doors. We can do this for you!
RW: Like the style of cabinets. SY: Inset again. :/ I mean, if you want inset, you can get them, but they will be significantly more.
RW: This is totally the kind of range/stove we want. 6 burner. Small top + regular bottom oven. LG or GE Prof line. SY: got it.
RW: Woman this is so perrttyyy. Good work. Would change stove and fridge but lord love all else here. Even tho we have open behind stove for sure (which kills me cause damn it I would pay for a water spigot at stove).
RW: These are the cabinets I love. Also like the counter top here. Smooth and not too thick. SY: these are the inset cabinets again - $$$$.
SY: the marble mosaic white & gray flower pattern you like below. Because of your budget & also the higher maintenance of marble, I'd keep this just in the back of your niche above your sink, and either wrap your countertop up your walls or do a simple white tile on the rest of your backsplash. RW: - oh it’s pretty!
