2. Large space made to appear smaller For this living room, we have a good amount of space to work with. You could almost imagine how big and opened up it could feel if the color tones were shifted to the lighter side instead of dark. What makes it appear smaller than what it really is, is the dark tones in the furniture, shelving, and other decorations in the room. Dark tones absorb light, kind of like a black t shirt does with the sun. In this room everything feels "absorbed" and tight, thus causing the illusion of being smaller.
3. Space extended outward For this family/ living room we see the use of basically a window wall to represent space extended outward. The illusion comes from being able to see nature outside. When you are in this room you would feel like the sights outside are "seeping" into your house. It allows a room to feel very open and big because it's essentially the room you are in plus as far as the eye can see.
4. Room divided This is an example of room divided, because there is no solid or actual wall that is splitting the two rooms that appear to be the family room and the dining room. The illusion of the wall divided method is to make your rooms appear separate but still making them feel open with a flowing layout. This image uses wall divided by using a frame with lots of holes so that you can still have a flow between the two rooms and it's also great for more storage space, as this photo shows.
5. Horizontal line This kitchen is a great example of horizontal line use within rooms. The wood beams on the ceiling are directional lines that go towards the light source which is appealing to the eye and they go with the shape of the room (makes it feel longer). This room also has the horizontal lines in the flooring, it is the opposite direction of the ceiling beams to widen the room back up a little bit. If all the lines had been going one way it would create and illusion of being very narrow and small, but the way they used horizontal lines to utilize the space looks really good in this photo.
6. Vertical line This bathroom is an example of vertical line because the two mirrors are eye catching and they are long and tall vertically. If this bathroom just had one big mirror there would no longer be the vertical effect. Two mirrors going from the counter to the ceiling gives the illusion that the room is taller.
7. Diagonal line The use of diagonal lines is used in the ceiling beams. The illusion the diagonal lines creates is a higher point in the ceiling. You can almost imagine how on the other side these diagonal lines would look and how they would come together at the top to make the ceiling appear higher. Also, the diagonal beams match the wood flooring which is appealing to the eye so its not just a white room.
8. Zigzag lines Zigzag lines are very prominent in this bathroom. The illusion this gives is a textured pattern. The color is light so the room feels airy and open, but the lines add a feature to the room to spruce it back up and give it texture. If the room had just been white it may feel empty, but with the different shades of greys in the zigzag tiles it feels fuller.
9. Curved lines The curved lines in this photograph are the directional lines of the staircase. The illusion created from the curved lines is a wider center and overall wider space. The circle rug helps create this illusion, because its is adding more curve and instead of having straight lines with curved ones around it, it all flows together being rounded.
11. Heavy Apparent Weight Heavy Apparent weight is portrayed majorly through the couch in this room. Because the couch is solid and straight black it gives off the illusion of being very heavy. There are other dark tones and objects in the room, but the couch specifically is what gives off a heavy look.
13. Texture that gives a cool feeling The cool toned texture portrayed here is the walls filled with white tiles. The tiles give the illusion of being smooth and glossy, and the light color gives it almost an "icy" feel. It is not a vibrant texture, its subtle and calming just like most cool toned colors are.
14. Positive and Negative Space I believe this is a good example of a balance between both positive and negative space. This room if we look beyond the furniture we could see that the room was once huge, very open concept, with lots of negative space. The designer of this room added furniture, colors, and lines to fill nearly two areas put together which is the positive space balancing out the negative space. Also, the furniture added is not overwhelming you still have open areas and walkway, so its a good balance between having room and filling it up.
15. Two types of line The dominant type of line in this closet is horizontal lines. We see horizontal lines in the shelving on the back wall and also the drawers on the side vanity. The secondary type of line that is also there but not as evident is vertical lines. Vertical lines are shown on the right side of the photo in the two mirrors that are long vertically.
16. Three elements of design For the element illusion of space, the diesigner used white walls and windows to really open up the room but then a black ceiling to kind of offset all the brightness so that it didn't end up looking too big. As for texture, the wood table adds a lot to this room because its a warm tone that makes a space that feels modern, clean, and "no emotion" into something that feels a little more cozy and comforting. Also, plants add to the texture of this room and the fresh feeling. Lastly, the is line use in the ceiling and windows. In the ceiling we can see a lot of horizontal lines crossing with each other, but the dominant ones are going with the long table both leading towards the lighting (window).
1. Small space made to appear larger This sunroom takes a relatively small space that appears very narrow and creates the illusion of it being a bigger space. To make this space appear much larger than what it seems, the designer of this room chose to use light colored walls, and light toned furniture to create an airy and light feel. Light tones makes a space feel more clean and open whereas dark colors make a room feel even more dark and confined. Also, to add to the feeling of openness, the room has windows allowing more light for airiness.
