Wondering about a way of dividing the kitchen from the "hallway." These tall storage areas are reminiscent of the cabinets, some with pillars reaching to the ceiling, that flank an entrance. You can still see into the room (so maybe not solving my problem about feeling exposed to the living room and stairs), but they help create a feeling of transition.
