Tbh I’ve positioned all my own lighting and have a very keen intrest in lighting forms, that is a great piece but I’d only possibly ever think about a lighting consultant if I had a vast open plan space as I find these are where most people would make mistakes or not make the most off.

@OnePlan - absolutely correct. I my experience with projects, various professionals are called in at different times and the project manager doesn't always know when to engage each profession. It can also be worthwhile engaging the lighting designer at an early stage whilst still designing the layout, as we not only discuss artificial light but also try to help the owner get the most from natural daylight as well; sometimes making small structural changes can have a huge impact on the lighting requirements as we can discuss infra-red and ultra-violet impact from daylight on your paintings, etc. or adding light pipes to naturally illuminate dark internal areas with daylight.

@Beano - there's nothing wrong with positioning your own lights; after all most lighting is personal preference. However, correctly illuminating a space has a massive impact on health and well-being, and whilst you may be able to correctly determine your requirements, most people are not and they rely on a person who is untrained in this discipline to advise them.
