If it’s wide enough or there’s a space by the back door, add a shoe bench, coat hooks within framing and more storage above and below. Textured vinyl on the walls.

Space from the hallway has been borrowed by moving the wall back to create this dining area with built in bench seating. So the hall is narrower at this point.

Polished plaster walls bounce light in a narrow hallway. Wallpaper with metallic sheen would do the same thing.
Dark wall on the right, white wall on the left so it recedes. Can make the space seem bigger. White painted floorboards, skirting and bannisters. And architectural ceiling feature. Vintage radiator same colour as the wall so it blends in. Red in a picture matches red lampshade.

In a small space paint everything - wall, door, ceiling, skirting one colour to give the area presence.
If the colour scheme is drab, add a splash of colour with a picture
White or pale neutrals is good for dark narrow hallways, but a bright wall can work, too
