Gravel, on the other hand, is a material you may want to avoid. “It can get stuck in the pads of their feet,” Lindsay says. Instead, she recommends resin-bound aggregate, shown here, as a permeable hardscape alternative that will also stay in place. “It provides a bit of cushioning and can easily be hosed down,” she adds. “I think it looks really great for paths — you can create interesting curves and get lots of different colors.” If you choose this material for your yard, do not attempt the project on your own. “It’s quite a specific process, and it needs a professional to lay it,” Lindsay says.
a small patch of artificial grass can be better at concealing where a dog has urinated than lawn ... “I suggest you use quite a short pile with dogs,” Lindsay says. Liquids soak through, solids can be lifted off and the whole area can be hosed down. “There are various subbases for artificial grass. Avoid a cushioned base, which can harbor smells,” she says. Instead, she suggests, choose a Type 1 aggregate to level the surface out at 3 to 4 inches deep, with 1 inch of granite dust on top. That way, any liquids will just drain through.
laundry-pantry 68 square feet; 7 feet, 7 inches by 9 feet. “This laundry room is in the middle of the home, and the homeowner wanted it to look beautiful because you can see it just walking down the hall,” designer Keely Hersh says. “Before it was remodeled, it was dark and had a water heater in the corner that had to go. I knew there was plenty of room for built-in cabinets floor to ceiling along one wall. ...I used plain Creamy [also by Sherwin-Williams] for the trim and ceiling and the cabinets too. But I added a warm glaze and clear coat on top of the white to give the cabinets a beautiful custom look.

When living in a smaller home, creating multi-use rooms is essential. This bedroom serves the three functions of guest room, office and home gym with the installation of a custom Murphy Bed. When the bed is fully enclosed, there is plenty of room for exercise. A desk drops from the front of the bed to create a large work area. And the bed can be pulled down to accommodate desks. The unite also features drawer and hanging storage space.
IKEA HEMNES dresser: Satin-y paint, a stained top, and new hardware Three low-cost upgrades make this dresser appear much more custom. First, a fresh coat of French blue paint and a stained top distinguishes the piece from the traditional all-white, -brown, or -natural options IKEA offers. Then, affordable hardware (less than $10 for the set!) pulls the look together.

Craftsman home in California’s Central Valley ...covered front porch ...has many functions, including keeping direct sunlight out of the house on hot days and providing cover while unlocking the door on rainy ones. But one of the most important things porches do is foster community. Many new urbanist neighborhood designs prioritize the front porch as an important part of the architecture and the community. low fenced front garden would also foster community since out working the garden as neighbors pass by

You can make your open-plan space feel cozier by dividing zones with furniture. This large cabinet helps to separate the living room from the dining area to create a more intimate feel. It also has the added benefit of providing vast amounts of storage. If your budget doesn’t stretch to a custom cabinet, try placing a large sideboard or shelving unit between the two spaces. Any kind of barrier will help to break up the space and make it feel snug.
i am leaning toward linoleum for kitchen/bath, or even the whole house depending on existing floors. This is Marmoleum 'cocoa'. i also like the concrete-look and maybe the slate look.

storage: Exploit the Eaves An attic conversion provides a good opportunity to edit your possessions. These projects “result in the loss of a significant amount of storage, which offers the opportunity to undertake some serious decluttering,” Eitel says. “However, there are certain items that can’t be sent to recycling, such as suitcases and Christmas decorations, so it’s important to ensure that any [attic] conversion makes good use of the total volume,” he says.
Many people want a home with an open-plan layout, which provides a lovely feeling of space and connection. However, such a design does present some issues. “The loss of wall space results in a loss of storage space,” Angus Eitel says. His solution is to merge storage in the different zones to create a harmonious look. “Using kitchen cabinets in the adjacent living space makes perfect sense,” he says. Here, for example, large kitchen cabinets are positioned at the back of the living room to create a wall of storage. “Island units are another solution,” Eitel says.
lose the wallpaper. but i appreciate the creative use of the railing on left to allow for opening the wall just partway, even though it's a step down
