would like upper cabinets. Nice backsplash. In this Minnesota farmhouse kitchen by Angela Barnhart of White Birch Design, quartersawn white oak lower cabinets match a wrap on the range hood. The floor is wood-look luxury vinyl planks, and the countertop is white quartz that resembles marble. The belle of the ball, though, is the tile backsplash that extends from the counter to the ceiling, made from heavily textured subway tile in the palest of pale blues.
Weathered spruce shiplap planks wrap the 30-inch range hood. Off-white porcelain backsplash tiles feature a worn encaustic look and subtle pattern. “The client found inspiration photos she really loved, and they all had handmade encaustic-look tiles, so we found some that would work with her budget,”
If you dislike bending down to load and unload your dishwasher, this may be the solution for you. Building your dishwasher into a taller cabinet — similar to how you would with an eye-level oven — will be easier on your back. Incorporate a drawer that can be used to store anything from dishwasher tablets to plates or chopping boards below the dishwasher, to make use of the extra space
neat backsplash
great pantry - neat backsplash application

soothing colour palette, great storage
nice layout
Designer Katie Kath of Jkath Design Build + Reinvent makes it look easy in this Minnesota kitchen. Soothing off-white cabinets with gray and beige undertones support soft white walls and trim. Kath cleverly brings cohesiveness to this open plan through the use of light wood found in the flooring, range hood accent, dining table, stair treads, handrail and newel post. Warm tones team up wonderfully with the walnut island base, brown barstool seat backs and brass knobs, pulls, light fixtures and faucet. Black window mullions, bannisters, stool bases, dining chairs and dining chandelier add a final design touch.
Like the island shape and design: The multifunctional island in this London kitchen designed by Sarah Mailer Design includes a built-in wine refrigerator and a large open cubby for storing cookbooks. The design team painted the island base navy blue to provide strong contrast to the light gray perimeter cabinets.
Cabinet doors fold out to reveal built-in walnut shelves, a coffee machine, microwave, glasses and cocktail supplies. A beverage refrigerator sits below. “There’s a screened porch on the back of the home and this gives the kids a way to grab a juice or soda when they’re playing on the porch,” Kath says.
A custom coffee and beverage station is located just off the kitchen.
soothing palette (walls Simply White by Benjamin Moore), layered lighting but doesn't look busy, love the windows by the sink.
I like the layout with the fridge, range and oven on the one side, the sink by the window. and the island. Would rather have seating on 2 sides of the island, but overall great layout. Some of the lighting seems oddly placed. Alder cabinets - warm
nice, neutral, pleasing tones
nice colour scheme and backsplash
You may not want to eliminate any true upper cabinets, but the partial cabinets that wrap around a hood fan usually have little function other than hiding ductwork. Choose a beautiful range hood that is meant to be seen, and let it create a little visual break from the upper cabinets. Even this small bit of depth can make a kitchen feel less claustrophobic.
Drawer dividers for kitchen tools. Standard drawer tray inserts work great for silverware, but kitchen tools can be a little more challenging to corral; they’re not uniform in size and not everyone has the same kind. “My best suggestion is [a set of] drawer dividers, and not a tray. That way you can create the sizes of spaces you need,” Cohen says. Look for adjustable dividers, which can be expanded to fit your kitchen drawers. As you have done with the rest of your organizing, group kitchen tools by type before placing them in drawers.
other side of the room - instead of the beverage/coffee fridge, would be great to have the microwave - like the integration idea. Prep sink is a nice touch.
beautiful - lots of light, nice layout, colours - warm.
nice - would still like some sort of shelf by the fridge, but the island isn't too far away - nice layout otherwise. Nice colour combo too.
like the marble look quartz backsplash and counter and the range hood that looks like a cabinet
If you’ve got a rather large collection of food storage containers, then a better and more flexible option is a drawer with adjustable dividers. This allows you to create customized slots for organizing containers and lids, and gives you the freedom to store other vessels, tops, trays and other random pieces that tend to accumulate in a kitchen.
But you can also specify a deep rollout that functions like the divided-drawer systems shown above in this article.
This view of the same rollout unit with different items shows how metal U-bars can be arranged in holes at the bottom of the drawer to create custom spaces for storage containers. You can slide the U-bars for the lid slots in either direction to accommodate various sizes and amounts of lids. Talk to your kitchen designer or cabinetmaker about integrating a unit like this.

love it all!
Installing a full-height backsplash around a curved hood that sits between two cabinet towers on the countertop is not for the faint of heart,” Russell says. “We had to slow down this install process so we could get everything just right. Step one, install the counters. Step two, install the right cabinet tower — but not the left, because we don’t want it to get scratched when we go to put the stone up on the wall. Step three, install a 3-centimeter-thick piece of plywood in the shape of the hood on the wall so that we have something to mount the hood to. Step four, install the full-height backsplash. Step five, install the left cabinet tower, crown molding and hood.”
Homeowners’ request. For this off-the-grid modern cabin, the owners wanted a kitchen open to the living room and with a large island. Range hood. Medium-tone flat-panel white oak cabinets conceal a 30-inch stainless steel mini insert. A black metal vent continues above the cabinets and through the roofline, matching a similar vent for the fireplace in the living room, opposite the kitchen. Other special features. Polished-marble countertops and slab backsplash. Island dining area with seating for six. Concrete floor. Paneled appliances. Atlantic white cedar ceiling.
beautiful - marble wall tile is gorgeous, love the window - but worry about birds!
like colour scheme, windows by sink, built-in look for microwave etc
great set up - I like the dishes sink off to the side, and the prep sink in the main island...
The island is painted what Prevost describes as “a very very moody blue” with a porcelain slab countertop that looks like marble.
An angled design — the result of a staircase on the other side of the wall to the right in this photo — maximizes countertop and storage space. The island includes a raised walnut cutting board on one end and a seating area on the other, as well as a prep sink, trash pullout, microwave drawer, beverage cooler and cookbook cabinet. The base cabinets are painted in Magnetic Gray by Sherwin-Williams.
laptop island storage - Island details. Natural walnut base with a 3-inch quartz countertop that resembles white Macaubas quartzite. The island doubles as the homeowners’ office workstation, so Woodruff added a slim shelf below the countertop for storing a laptop and other materials. Outlets at the back let the owners recharge their laptops. Drawers on one end store papers and other supplies. “The shelf and drawers turned out to be a simple yet ideal solution,” Woodruff says.
