Tour an Architect’s Home Filled With Light and Vintage Charm

In this episode of Houzz TV Live, architect Lesley Cotton gives a virtual tour of her new-build, 1960s-style home in Oxford. Double-height windows flood the main living spaces with natural light and provide leafy views of the garden. In the kitchen, she’s strategically placed the hob and sink on a peninsula unit, so she can face the garden or guests sitting in the dining nook. An airy, loft-like living room perches over the kitchen and features warm wood elements and vintage furniture. Famed designers Charles and Ray Eames inspired several of the home’s details, including exposed concrete block walls, a wooden, open-tread staircase and oriented strand board (OSB) wall cladding.

LOVE this home, and the kitchen is a delight - so compact, efficient and cheerful, the palette is lovely with the aqua cabinetry and warm wood countertop.

Well done! Curious about the OSB board ceiling... does this off-gas at all?

Beautiful! Elegant but also homey. I’m curious where the home is in Oxford and also total square footage.

Love her home. Very interesting to hear her perspective as she is both the client and the architect. Would love more interviews like this.

Uniquely created space with high consideration given to the context. Perfect mix of modern and traditional materials.

Beautiful, light, airy and uncluttered. Love the designer's style. I wish we could've seen the bathroom to glean more wonderful ideas.

Combination of materials and proportions really works. My favorite parts are the concrete walls, the stairs, the light-filled spaces, and the connection of the kitchen and living area.

Cement block walls look very much like Steve Ehrlich’s cement block walls used in his lovely CA home, which was also featured on Houzz.

as a passionate recycler, lover of light and nature, not to mention turquoise and aqua, and greenery outside the windows - well this ticks all boxes for me! I also love the lack of pretension, the honesty of the raw materials on show, the humility of the size and style, and the sheer personality that shines through. So many architecturally designed spaces are beige monolithic structures, big enough to house the von Trapp family, and so sparsely decorated that they are completely devoid of any personality - this is the antithesis of those houses. Love every little bit of it!

Gosh I'm bowled over by such lovely comments!

And to answer the query about the OSB - it is made from materials that off gas in the mill, so it doesn't do this in the home. Also it was coated with a clear sealant by the decorators to prevent the spread of flame, so it is sealed as well.

You can see the bathroom on my Houzz profile under New Build House project, photo below. I combined different colours and textures including a blue-black wall behind the basin and WC which works really well.

I confess to not being keen on the wall covering, but apart from that, it’s beautiful!

+1. Loved the house, not keen on the walls finish.
Also the engineered bamboo floors were a revelation, thanks!

Love that it feels truly like a home and not a show home :)
