white marks on dark walls when touched

Having used various dark paints for a few years, I’ve come across this same issue. Paint shops have no idea what I’m talking about when I ask them about it either so thought I would ask on here!

I’ve used a navy emulsion valspar, Crown dark grey matt vinyl emulsion and a F&B replica in Johnson’s kitchen paint in a matt finish (so it should be durable and wipeable etc)

I’ve primed and undercoated and done everything right painting wise and it occurs not just on new plaster either!

Whenever you brush past the paintwork or touch it, it leaves chalky white marks. I can wash the marks off but if I rub them with a soft clean cloth then it makes it worse. It’s so weird! And a nightmare to keep the walls looking clean :0/
The only one it hasn’t done that with is an eggshell version.

I’m actually wondering now - and it’s only just occurred to me whilst trying to get a sample photo of it ... that it could be due to dust on the walls??? LOL.
Don’t know why i never thought about dust. Our house is full of it (log burner, dogs....)

Anyone else come across this or is it not dust and something else?

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! The trim in your rooms is outstanding. To "tie the rooms together", the one thing I would do is install chair rail the same color as the existing trim. The horizontal lines of chair rail will move the eye around the room and into the next room creating a flow. Chair rail is relatively inexpensive, easy to install and would be wonderful compliment to your existing beautiful trim.

I would pick my flooring first. Then I would paint the walls. Then have a look at the room and see how you like it before you paint the cupboards or the brick. Do it in steps because I think your brick could look quite nice and I like your cupboards the way they are. Just don't jump too fast painting things that you can't reverse. It may be that you will still want to paint the brick and cupboards but better to see how things look before you do. You have a lovely space !

Hi, I have the same problem in my hallway. If your budget is tight, just replacing the ceiling light with something like a starburst pendant with at least 6 bulbs would instantly improve the space. Also I would hang some bold and bright artwork on the walls and put a runner on the floor. Mirrors are also great for your space. I'm attaching a photo example. See how the eye is instantly drawn to the bold door? Also if you can repaint the wall, I would recommend you to use glossy finish paint so the light can bounce off the walls too.
