Which top coat?

Hey guys
Making my own MDF kitchen cabinets that I'll be spraying with white matt emulsion and need a topcoat.
What do you guys recommend?
I hear water based polyurethane is not heat resistant. I don't want peeling on either side of the oven. And oil based will probably ruin my sprayer.
I'm inclined towards lacquer (preferably water based) but I want a satin finish.
Any suggestions?

I don’t think matt emulsion is a good choice for an undercoat. You should ideally be doing a couple of layers of primer, before two coats of top coat. I know high end kitchen makers often use Little Greene’s eggshell (probably oil based) and I have used the water based eggshell on furniture, but not sure if it is durable enough for a kitchen. Hopefully someone on Houzz can advice. Great effort though building your own kitchen, well done!

Interesting that you mention heat resistance. I’m worried now because I’m hand painting my kitchen cabinets with emulsion then using Wilko Ultra Tough quick dry clear varnish which is a polyurethane. However it does say on the tin that it resists heat..., I might do an experiment later with a hot saucepan! I’ve been using this varnish for a while now on other furniture and things with good results plus it’s cheap! If you’re spraying then perhaps a lacquer will be better. Hi Emily , a spoke with a local stone merchant and he got a piece in for me - the piece was badly stained from the transport straps and the merchant convinced me it wasnt workable for kitchens surface ... Snan, The bottom oval one in Eskandari's photos would also work in your room (or something like that). The oval shape visually gives height to the room which would work for you as well. I know that shopping around can sometimes be exhausting, but if you were up for the search that would be another option if you're not sure about the round one you have already. I would also look for something that combines the elements of your wallpaper as well as your fireplace (if you are not planning on changing it) in order to bring those together, i.e. try to bring in the color tones of the two.

I would say that it depends on how 'rich' you want your room to feel if you like the velvet then choose the cushions on the right but if you want a more neutral feel then go for the ones on the left but I love both so either one will be good

I have used this : https://www.polyvine.com/index.php/en/varnishes/water-based-varnishes/crystal-clear-lacquer on a couple of jobs and it seems to give a tough finish. I would recommend using a water based white primer rather than emulsion, B&Q do one that does a pretty good job and is a lot tougher than emulsion.

With mdf it's always a good idea to start with an oil based primer/undercoat. Emulsion will require multiple coats and lots of sanding between coats. I Wouldn't be too concerned about heat affecting the paint either,
