Tiling round window / past countertop?

We have started tiling our kitchen (flat white metro tile) and hit a dilemma that has caused us to down tools. Should we:

1) Leave only the back wall tiled and tile the windowsill only
Or
2) Continue the tiling round onto the window wall at the same level as the splash back so that the window recess is tiled half way up.

If we go option 2 then we’re stuck with where to stop the tiling as to go level with the countertop means stopping half way round a socket. Not sure our collective OCD will cope!

Pros, cons, or alternative options very welcome.

I wouldn't put any tiles on the wall and consider a crisp oak windowsill with a square edge that sits proud by about 5mm. We did this on our kitchen and utility room. White oiled oak.

i'd go with option 1 as i think metro tiles work best on a full wall, once you start cutting them to go around a window reveal and have beading it doesn't look great especially if they have a bevelled edge. i'd add an upstand to match your worktop and i'd build up the window sill so you can have a reduced height upstand under the window and then have the window sill the same as the upstand.

I think this is a really nice kitchen - you've done a nice job. The only thing that is throwing it off are the two different floors in dining and kitchen area. I'd like to see the same flooring continued through both areas. I think you'll be very pleased with the difference it makes. Since you do not like the wood or the tile, perhaps a porcelain 12x24 tile would work for you. It's very durable, so you wouldn't have to worry about the Newfies scratching it and very easy to maintain. You'd could opt for one of the wood grains on the market or one made to simulate stone. I think a greyish color would work well.

My understanding: You didn't find any problem functionally, but you feel this looks old & need some brightness & change in this. My advise: 1). Remove towel rod, shift it next to tub or behind closet & have full length mirror, which will make your space double & reflect natural light as well thus makes the space more bright. 2). Get couple of plants (small plants or bush type or creepers which doesn't occupy much space on floor but grows vertically). 3). Get some artifacts made from bright colored glass, can flower vase or wall hangings or glass tiles etc, these can be of yellow or Bright Orange color these are to be hung on walls opp to mirror or pasted(3M tape both side glued) if you are using tiles. 4). Get a mat of same color as artifacts & place between tub & closet. these all are easily done by yourself. OR if you can afford to then replace only green tiles & floor tiles if you wish to OR all tiles.

Grey floor tiles

Thank you Patricia. I just got back from tile store and saw this display which i think is beautiful - it's an italian marble so there will be inconsistencies which I think is actually what I love about it. I would imagine a cream colour kitchen but possibly with a light grey island, or would it be better to stay all the same?

I‘d stop at the one wall which you’ve done.

From previous experience tiling a window sill and the constant wiping of it makes the grout dirty, so I’d go with Colourhappy’s idea of a timber window sill. I too have this in my kitchen.

Or you could get the worktop people back to do a window cill and piece to fill between the window cill and the worktop

Shame you didn’t plan this at the time of fitting the kitchen. The ideal solution would have been to have the units higher so the worktop could have seamlessly gone to the window with no need for a sill. Now it’s done I think Jonathan’s suggestion is the best option.

Thanks for everyone's comments. This is really helpful and so nice to get such constructive and thoughtful comments.

This is our first major project and builders got us to first fix and my husband is doing the rest of the work himself (kitchen, bathroom installation, tiling). This forum is exactly what it's all about - design advice and solution solving from those that have been there and done it.

You're right Victoria - in an ideal world we could have had a higher windowsill (we're not keen on the counter top running into the window sill) but so hard to get every measurement spot on when you're planning a kitchen when the extension is just a shell. We're getting there though and really pleased so far. Just interior design and 2 bathrooms to go!

What Jonathan and Victoria said. Or two rows of tile and just the window sill in the 12mm version of your countertop.
