Advice/help needed. We are sanding and staining our hall floor ourselves but have ended up with lots of ‘scratch’ type marks that are very obvious now we have stained it. It also seems to shine in certain places and appear dull in others. Used Osmo oil in Honey. Not sure whether to try and finish it with with oil/wax/varnish or start again. Aiming for the waxy look that you see with reclaimed floorboards but lost as to how to achieve it - any advice welcomed! I have included photos of it after sanding and now after 2 coats of Osmo oil.
I personally wouldn’t have used Osmo Oil on a floor. Varnish in a Matt finish would have been better. I’m no expert though so would be interested on other views!
I know what you mean about the scratches and it’s hard to get across in the photos but there are scratches which we have done deliberately which look great and then there are strange marks which look shiny - my thinking is that our sanding wasn’t done well. I tried wax and oil finishes on a sample board and neither look great.
We are open to doing it again or just getting someone professional in to do it, thanks for your thoughts!
I used matt Osmo oil on my pine floorboards last year and the shine fades away. I found the shininess was where the oil was applied more thickly or where the sanding wasn't as 'deep'. I can see those big scratches you are referring to and they will need sanding out. You could trying doing it with an orbital hand sander rather than a floor sander to avoid redoing the whole floor.
