How to make the outside of a house look more attractive
Hello. I am hoping you may be able to offer some advice. The current owners of the attached property (See photos) have added a second storey to this bungalow. Inside it has all the space we need with a large garden and views over fields and paddocks. We can't get over the look of the outside of the property though. What can we do to make it more attractive/have more curb appeal?

Comments (22)What about 6 massive pots? Two one either side of the bay windows and one on either side of the front door. (I too have a massive gray gravel drive way. Trying to plant through the gravel brings on a whole other set of challenges. Pots are just more practical, for me anyway.) I love those trees in the lawn area.:) And the green trim. Comments (16)Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. Comments (12)Two ideas. Both times I would block up the entrance to the second half of the room to make more usuable space. Both ideas have a island with a dining table attached. Obviously these drawings are not to scale but everything should fit in. I would utilise the kitchen cuboards for utilities- intergrated appliances. If you can dont forget to use the space under your stairs as well. Also use the long wall at the bottom of the stairs for extra storage and alcoves....See More

4 years ago@E D you slay me lol :-) congratulations I'm assuming you are in the process of purchasing this house. Block paving can be so harsh especially when there is no allowances made for flowerbeds to soften it. I have block paving but fortunately I have a bed and planters on either side of the entry to my drive to soften things up. I would try to remove some of the block paving to make way for beds and possibly two planters either side of the doorway. I have attached a couple of pics for inspiration.

4 years agoI think lightening up the top part of the house and adding planting would look good too - I also think you should darken the paving at the front to a couple of shades darker than the roof to anchor the house to the ground and stop making it look so top heavy. I would also add a brightly coloured door to lead the eye downwards instead of up towards the roof, as well as adding plants and other bits of interest in the front garden will help draw the eye there instead of up towards the proportionately large roof space
