Gloss or matt kitchen cupboard doors

My dilemma is whether to go for matt or gloss kitchen cupboard doors. I am concerned that matt painted cupboard doors will show up greasy fingermarks. Also are greasy fingermarks difficult to remove from matt painted doors

I vote matt. And I don’t think they are difficult to clean

I have both in different homes (have posted this before, so the question has been asked previously).

I have super matt in my main home. Dove grey colour. Handleless. Love them. They look great and stylish but when the light shines on them at a certain angle you can see any marks and they’re not as easy to clean off as in the case of gloss. As much as I try to never touch the door only the handleless strip I do forget. I don’t class them as easy to clean.

In my holiday homes I have white gloss handleless. Easy to clean but you can also easily see the marks.

It’s a 50/50 case I think. All down to personal preference.

I would move the table to the window end of the room for view out and light while you eat . Perhaps turn it 90 degrees if that would work with the door opening. You may be able to seat 4. Make the rest of the right hand wall - about half of it a floor to ceiling wall of built in storage including the fridge. Suggest deep drawers for lower and double door pantry cupboards sitting above. The left hand wall in a long line of counter top with the cooker, sink, washing machine, lower cupboards or drawers. Tile backsplash along whole wall and two long open shelves plus art. Definitely replace the flooring - timber or even black and white checkerboard.

Hello Roundwood Design, Very nice!!..... there are just a few things I'd do differently.. Have a free standing range oven.. If we could... Wolf... Smeg double 9 burner duel fuel in chrome... Simply because I like gas for the hob and electric oven.. I really like very robust, industrial appliances.. Dualit toaster and Architect kettle, Kitchenaid in chrome.. No need to put these in corners! I'd choose a different sink... I do like ceramic butler style, concrete or a marble or other stone.. Slightly different tap.. Handles... I personally don't really like them...unless they are really really plain lengths of brass or those lovely brass cup handles.. Then I would paint the bottom cabinets a nice charcoal or a navy.. Or the walls a dark colour..If there was more height to contrast the light cupboards at head height.. I'd have a big larder cupboard or two if the space allowed... instead of corner units.. For food and for the table linen and crockery etc.. You could have boxed in the extractor and painted it the same colour as the cupboards- as there is a lack of chrome here.. that could have worked with the overall aesthetic of the room... The little 3 spot light.. Don't think that is sophisticated enough.. Have a look at Old School Electric.. Do love the shape of the doors and design and also the subway tiles choice and the use of matt paint! The floor is very nice too and the kitchen is well made.. : ))

It looks very good James. Even though as you say it was a clients design build, it works fine. Once the Island has stools it will fill it out better. Has that naked look at the moment. The position of the wine rack might cause issues but overall it looks like a really clean and fresh kitchen. Plenty of natural light and the colours compliment each other. The extractor is a nice feature too. Everyone has different opinions as I see on here but if the client is happy with it then job done. Looks really well fitted too.....well done :)

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

I have gloss, but I much prefer the look of matt. I don’t think I had my thinking head on when I bought my kitchen!

If it wasn’t down to cleaning, which look do you actually prefer? We have matt (had gloss previously) & prefer matt. A good microfibre cloth tends to get any marks off easily.

I just use Flash Kitchen on my matt doors. It cleans away fingerprints easily.

I understand the cleaning aspect but there are 2 other reasons to prefer gloss: 1) you just love the look and 2) gloss reflects the light round a dull/dark room. If the answer is no to these 2 questions then you should go with matt xx

Because we display Leicht and this Brand has finger print shrugging qualities to their matt lacquer I vote matt. Personally I think the worktop and floor choices reflects more light than the cabinet fronts. Best of luck with whatever you choose.

It is definitely a personal opinion, but the trend at the moment is for matt. In our Specialist Range it is definitely the most popular. There are alot of images around to fuel this and rightly so, it is a big change and offers a whole new look (though simply just a different finish).

I'd choose matt for it's more subtle quality and in the right design looks stunning.
