Feedback on kitchen design

Hi all,

We are about to start some internal renovations, starting with a new kitchen. I have never designed a kitchen, so I am very keen to get it right so I wondered whether I could get some feedback on the design that we have had made. I absolutely love the look of it (although I have not yet decided between the green or a dark navy blue) so it is more the practicalities that I could do with some help with.

We have gone for an induction hob with a canopy extractor hidden in the cupboard above and a composite sink (not undermounted). The three tall white units contain an integrated fridge freezer and a double width pantry unit.

Measurements of the kitchen bit are 3300mm (width of wall with ovens) x 3500mm (from oven wall to stools).

Looks wonderful, I do like the green, I guess you'd need to see the rest of the House to see if it fits in well with everything else. Everything is planned really well, loads of space.

I think i'd go for blue, but it's all down to personal preference and it would be boring if we were all the same.

Hi I love it! is very similar to our current design. Only comment I would make is you don't have any pan drawers. When we redo ours I'm going to put in as many as possible. Out of interest what have you in the corner cupboards?

Oops, didn't notice that this had double posted!

Caro, we have just gone for shelves. I'm not convinced by pull outs and carousels as everyone I know that has had one seems to break it in the first year!

Mary, it has been a while since I read the comments. I think you can take your time with growing with your new decluttered kitchen. It is truly beautiful with just the changes. Don't go spend a ton of money, save it and go on a holiday to a state park or something you have always wanted to do. If your friends that you invite over for dinner don't love ...... well just coming over and visiting,.... then oh well. As long as you are happy, but no need to break the bank..... you did great already. I love it, if you do more, please share though? And to bamamom, I so agree with you! My own, awful, claustrophobic kitchen is LESS than 8 ft x 11 ft... yep that tiny and horrible. I have taken out the nasty, dropped ceiling and have the slightly vaulted original one now, but with pipes showing where the HVAC was put in after and then the repiped ones....... I did not know they plumber would do this, much less the others were there.... gag me. And no money to do it up even decent.

I love the tall units but you need to go straight to the ceiling to prevent dust and dirt settling on the top. I would put a row of small up and over cupboards along the very top as an option. Very handy for unsightly bulky items. I don't like the end open shelves by sink very dated but what you could do is a long double shelf all the way along the island with a wine racking either side for balance vertically. I think shelving each side of the sink would be better. You have a lot of cupboards but no deep drawers which are highly valued these days. Good selling point. I Like your colour suggestions... The little Greene paint company have a lovely grey so does farrow and ball. Where are you sourcing your Quartz and what flooring? Do your ovens have easy open shelf doors ..handy as they retract so don't get in the way as you take food out..Neff offer best ones. If you want a better balance of tall you could always do fridge freezer one side and pull out pantry on the other with racking. Then on sink side don't go all the way along the wall just have it as centred space so you can pull out larder doors. On your island you will need your bin as this'll be prep area? What is the room opposite tall cupboards? Need the island to look good from that side as that is what you will see. Hope of help. I'm embarking on the same thing and have spent hours and hours researching!

All, Looking for advice from those who work in Kitchen Design. I recently finished my studies and am qualified Interior Designer (Higher Diploma BTEC). I am currently working at Kitchen Design Showroom. I was hired specifically do 3D Kitchen Renders / Presentation Packs / Face to Face presentation of proposed design to clients etc. I really love kitchens design and even though I am qualified designer, my course emphasis was Commercial Design (Hospitality / Retail outlets). I feel I have a lot to learn in order to feel confident to design kitchens (logical next step). Can anyone recommend good go to resources for Kitchen Designers - books, links? Am I best off learning on the job or do people think it would be worth doing a follow on Diploma specifically in Kitchen Design? Thanks everyone!

Oh my god, thank you! This is beyond my Photoshop skills so thanks much for turning it navy for us! The other colours we are using around the house are F&B Green Smoke, LG Dock Blue, F&B GreenBlue and LG Light Peach blossom so a real mix.

I think it looks really lovely and I would definitely go for green. I think it looks fresh and clean and most importantly of all, distinctive and different. The dark blue kitchen is becoming a bit of a current design cliche and I think that the green shade in your images looks great with the floor and the white units. I don’t know if it is just in the CGI but the black grouting on the tiling seems to jar a bit. Other than that, I think you have made great choices

Hi, looks great! Like previous comment I would add pan drawers if budget allows and would also swap the cupboard between the induction hob and oven for another set of drawers ... always useful for utensils/oven gloves when cooking. You’ve got plenty of cupboard space but not a huge amount of drawers. Please do post a final image!

Hi - looks like the DW is to the right of the sink - this would be a trip hazard between hob and sink and also means you can’t easily unload dishes from DW into wall units ( unless you have arms like MrTickle ) Also - tricky to see well on my phone - but looks like there’s no clearance space between oven and the run of tall units ? So the over doors may clip any handle projection on the pantry cabinets ? I totally agree with all of the previous comments re changing most cabinets for drawers, which are more convenient to use. So basically a reasonable start, but needs a few tweaks to make it better in my experience!

As others have said, pan drawers, they are more expensive than cupboards, but they hold a lot more. We use ours to store pans, crockery, baking stuff. Also, have you got magic corners to go in the corner cupboards, again, an additional expense, but they mean that you can use and access the whole cupboard, you don't lose stuff at the back. Have a really good look around kitchen shops, including the big warehouses such as B&Q just to see what is out there, there are also excellent resources online as to the most ergonomic way of laying out the various bits of a kitchen (cooking, washing up etc). We planned ours ourselveses and then went to Howdens where they just dropped the whole thing into their computer to make sure we had everything ordered. In my experience, the kitchen planners at the warehouse shops are sales people who try to sell you as many units as possible. You need to look at what you will actually be storing. Looks lovely though!

I’m guessing from the images that you have L shaped base units in the corners as the corresponding doors only have one handle on. I presume these are hinged together. As an alternative you could have doors that open independently which would have handles on each to continue the flow of handles. I always think having 900 x 900 L shaped base units in the corner is a great idea as it gives you full access into the corners. No need for magic corners which cost mega and take up a lot of space.

Another suggestion regarding the drawers, as opposed to having sets of 3 or 4 it looks slicker with just 2 deep (except under the hob where you’ll need 3 as the top one will be for cutlery) and then within each of the 2 deep drawers have space saver drawer inside (sometimes called hidden drawers).

When I saw the images I thought it looks like a really strong clean shape design and love the green and white contrast. Really nice. Agree with the practical suggestions do good luck!

Which way does your door open? Is it into the room or the other way? It could be a pain if it opens into the room. Also think about whether you have enough surface near the oven to place hot pans for basting or turning etc whilst cooking. You don't want to have to carry hot pans too far to put them down. where will you put the microwave toaster and kettle if you are having them - the workflow around them is important too.

Thanks Obobble! We still need to decide about doors. We are knocking some walls down to make this room so a lot of this is still at planning stage. I'm really tempted by pocket doors but don't know what the sound insulation is like. Anyone have any experience of this?

Hello Hazel, your kitchen design looks so fresh and contemporary. I must say I love the green and white combination, coupled with the wooden table, gold stools and rose gold accents in the pendant lights you have. It is so unique and on trend. My gut instinct would be to go with the safer option in Navy as you may not get bored of it as quickly, however if you are daring enough - stick to the green! Its new, energetic and inspired! Its a great design.

My only concern is the tiled splashback.. simply because I feel like it dates the overall look. Perhaps you would be interested in reconsidering that particular feature?

The oven positon looks quite precarious to me, it looks as if you'd need to stand at an angle to remove things? I also agree re drawers, you can also get ones with a simple divider for pan lids which I know I'd find useful. I personally prefer just one "unit" below/above the hob or it looks split in two. The wall units also look a little low over the hob but I think that might just be an illusion with the Upstand! I'm also not too sure re the tiles, have you tried it continuing the worktop as a splashback (is it marble?). I love the green and white combo btw but it can look a little cold but I think a pile of wooden chopping boards on that back wall would solve that. I'd also continue the brass/gold for the tap. Totally personal but I would prefer a separate fridge and freezer (although actually I'd go 1.5 fridge!) rather than the double larder But obviously look at what you store.

It looks as if it will be a stunning room

I was just wondering if you’d mind sharing how your kitchen/family/dining room turned out?
We have practically the same L shaped room size and I’m struggling with visualising how it will turn out!
We’re looking to do pretty much exactly what you’ve done.

Drawers, more of them! Drawers are amazing! Wide one under the hob and in the peninsula.

And if plateaus in corner cabinets break in the first few years, they were bad quality. Even my ikea one has been fine for 6 years now and I load tons of pans on it (only my cast iron goes elsewhere).

I like the green and the color combination of your design, nice work!
