Curtain advice

Hi, we have redocorated our living room. Got new 3 seater sofa, throw, cushions made & footstool recovered. I haven't changed the curtains. Do you think the curtains work? My aim was to brighten up the room. If you do think I should change the curtains, what colour and pattern should I change them for?

I could see a roman blind in a damson shade with large pattern maybe diamond or trellis shape. Plenty of light when it is folded up and still colour. Look at Homefocus fabrics for fabric. There is a beautiful amethyst cotton check on sale at 10 EUR a meter. You wouldn't need much quantity for a roman blind. Consider.

Alas, your curtains are too dark for a bright room -- although I like the general area of colour; the pinkish tone works beautifully with your green. How about surprising yourself with dusty pink curtains?

Thanks. I wonder if I'm changing them should I go for something totally different though? Should I go for eyelets or French pleat? I like the velvet but the grey sofa by the window is that type of material so I should probably mix up the texture a bit. What do you reckon? Any Irish stockists for curtains?

Hello - as a I have always used for my clients projects 15-30cm beyond either side of the window and 12-15cm above the window frame. This may vary depending on the window and what's around the frame and if there is suitable fixing when installing into the plaster or wall.

Hello there... I hope I can be of some help as I have almost an identical sitting room - I will just share with you my sitting room this year!! All the walls started out in Dulux Timeless colour so I wanted to add an accent colour- like you, I have one end of the room that is patio doors. So the opposite wall to those, I chose as an accent wall - I know a lot of people suggest not having an accent wall but perhaps having horizontal painted stripes of colour etc... But as I was doing the painting, I knew I would have made a real hash of that!! So the third pic is my first attempt at an accent wall - The Greene Paint company - colour Bassalt. This was nice but I just got bored of it - it worked well against the richness of the wood floor etc and was very much a statement but in a few months I just couldn't settle with it. After several coats of white I have now settled on Farrow & Balls colour Lamp Room Grey. I know this seems all very neutral, but from the second photo you will see I have gone for cream curtains with neutral vertical pom-poms - but, by doing all this, I can now change the accent colour in this room at the drop of a hat and quite importantly - INEXPENSIVELY! For instance, if I wanted to, for Xmas, if I was going to spend a lot of time in that room, I could a. Go for red and cream cushions and create a Scandinavian look! Or b. Go for silver beaded cushions and silver candle jars and have a winter wonderland look! And equally in the summer, I could go for pastel pink floral cushions and a vase of delicate roses to bring the garden into the sitting room or just keep it neutral with ivory roses and a hint of lime green. So my advice would be to keep the expensive things neutral and then you can alter the in expensive things as you go along. I also think one expensive piece in any room is a good investment - be it a huge oversized pewter bowl or a something similar - that again is neutral in colour but is a statement piece. Yes, I agree velvet + velvet probably isn't the best idea. I like the idea of French pleats, although either would work. Go with the look you like best. Look at faux silk to get more gleaming and polished look, or faux (or real) linen for a more contemporary and informal look -- more of the feel of your throw pillow. (I believe real silk does not wear well in curtains.)

Either way, get something that hangs well and cleanly. The scrunched look isn't right for a narrow area like that.

www.visioninteriors.ie Looking at your curtains and curtain pole, in my opinion it is the pole that initially needs to be corrected - it is a nice steel pole,however the importance of a pole being fitted correctly makes a huge difference to the hanging and look of the curtains. the brackets at each end of the pole should be at least 8"/20cm away from each sides of the window, this allows the curtains to frame the window nicely while letting in as much light as possible. The brackets should be 2"/5cm away from the finial ( ball end in this case) at each end of the pole. The space between the bracket and the finial (end of the pole) has one curtain ring only and the rest of the curtain rings/hooks are the window side of the brackets so that the curtains can hang straight. Whether you buy new curtains or hold onto your existing ones check out the fitting of the pole and remedy it - you will be amazed at the difference this can make.

Thanks all, much appreciated. So you're all suggesting something lighter than what's there but similar shade? Purple based? If I was to go for a roman would I leave the current roller blind aswell and how would this look from the outside if I've rollers and curtains upstairs?

I did something similar in the kitchen left the roller behind the roman blind. I just pull it down in the sun when needed. I think the roman blind would widen the look of the room. Would u consider a glass statement chandelier possibly contemporary?

Thanks - I think you're right that a roman might make the room feel wider. I'm not keen an chandeliers but maybe a glass lampshade would be a good idea

I like the colours in this room but there is very little pattern. How about curtains in the black and white geometric pattern you have used in the cushion on the large couch. They could look well behind the deep grey couch in the window. Or plain white could be nice against the cream walls instead. You possibly have enough actual colours here already without adding more via the new curtains. Can I say that it's a lovely cosy room and I love your flooring and inset stove.

I think eyelet headings are more casual, French pleats are really luxurious
especially with a deep heading. The pole seems to be too long and thinner than
something I would recommend. You can get away with the curtains but if you were
to change them I would go for something plain, a paler shade, a French pleat
heading and a chunkier pole. I’d also add a mix of colourful cushions with some
patterned ones thrown in. Good luck

I see that there is a radiator under the window. Do you light the fire all the time or do you sometimes just have the radiator on? Long curtains covering the radiator may block some of the heat when closed. I would also suggest a Roman blind for that reason as it would suit the style of the room, uses less fabric than curtains and can be interlined for added warmth. Keeping the roller blind behind it when you don't want to pull it down, but need to block sunlight from the room. I see that the builder has put the room ventilation very close to the window. You must be careful not to block this as you have a stove in the room. (Probably why the current curtains are hanging the way they are), and for that reason I think curtains are not a good option for your window.

I love the colour on your walls and I love the lighter coloured couch. You could mix and match cushions to connect the two couches. I think the curtain pole would be ok if it was centred on the window...it seems to be exposed more on the right hand side. I'm sure its only a minor adjustment. Definitely lighter coloured curtains, the dusky pink is a lovely idea and then you could bring that colour somehow into the cushions too. Have you considered changing your light fitting? Maybe one with 3 arms/bulbs, in the same colour as your curtain pole, I can't tell if it's chrome or brass. Let us see some pics if you do go ahead with any of the ideas suggested here.
