Bedroom badly needs an update!!

Hi, we recently bought an apartment and the first focus is the bedroom. We're keeping the furniture in the photos but are open to painting it etc. Keeping the carpet also but need advice on bedding
/curtains/what to do with the furniture etc.! We want something calm but with a bit of a luxe feel! Thanks in advance for any advice you have! We're new to all this!

If you picked this photo in your ideabook for its style and pale neutral colors, then you need to choose new bedding and replace the curtains, as charlee says. Your ideabook photos are at odds with the current contemporary bedding. Remove the chest of drawers, center the bed, remove the photo frame over the bed, remove the mirror on the window sill. Buy a wicker laundry bin or put the current pop up bin in the wardrobe. Simplify by removing things. When budget permits, add small nightstands with drawers and lamps.

My first thought is to paint all the furniture to match, be it white or off-white but it will be more cohesive if it all matches.

My second thought is relocating the dresser and hutch closest to the bed, it's really crowding the bed and it's the bed that should be the focal point. Center the bed on that wall and remove or at least lower the picture collage above the headboard. I really think you need something that will make a statement so it should be as wide as the headboard.

Your bedding and window treatments should compliment each other but not be identical. So if you go with a patterned comforter, go with solid curtains choosing a color from the comforter.

Do you have favorite colors? Look first for a comforter in those colors.

sorry haven't been on here much and havent had time or money to much about my room but should be getting to work in the next few weeks/month. I've added some more photos to give a better idea of the layout of the room and the dimensions. the first one is a view from the bed or the foot of the bed, so you can see the wall space isn't massive. The horrible curtains are waiting to be changed when I get all the work done! The second photo is the other wall to show where the door to the room is. Carolyn the wardrobe in the photo there is the one I'm going to put in the nook and then I was thinking of getting a carpenter to build shelving on the wall where the wardrobe currently is. Around the bed then would be more storage and shelves either side to act as bedside tables. As anyone any ideas for the type of shelving I should be looking to get built? I would be looking to hold - clothes that wouldn't be hanging like jumpers, t-shirts etc. I would definitely need an area for books/magazines, an area for toiletries and maybe then storage for items such as bed linen, blankets and random items like chargers for phones, laptops etc.

not alot happening at the moment, its winter! alotta rain, lotta. but i am bedding down to get this over with and maybe in the spring the spirits will rise once more. i hope so. i would love to feel i was doing something to keep my hopes and dreams alive, i dont see what i can do until the spring. when i bring the topic up, especially to those that moved away and came down this neck of the woods, they say they had friends who felt it was too far too and moved back home. i guess thats how i feel, thats what i want and i just want to be a bit more uplifted, i think rain dampens down things a bit!!! santa Ma Margaret!

Paint the doors black matt and the fames cream add silver crome door furniture. Huge silver mirror above the covered radiator then add a runner of any colour you like and match it with the lamps and lighting. hey presto done.

Hello nicnoll, Another idea could be to have a wall light that is all about the bulb! A few links to both ideas.... Copper is good too... One other idea... have a rose with multi flex wires... centralised where the current one is.. Or you run them in loops across the ceiling to the opposite wall and have a wall light fitting but the electric cable comes from the one ceiling point. So less to do wiring wise.. Is this the only location for the bed? Can you possibly switch the bed and the tall dresser. The curtains are short - darn, it would be nice if they were to the floor. I'd take that wall cabinet down.

Hi. I do agree with all of what Apple pie said. If the chest of drawers or bed can't go elsewhere at minimum I'd remove the unit above and add a table lamp and vase of good faux flowers o the chest. If budget permits, move the air vent literally down a few feet where it is so it's not prominent, if not create a collage of art or decorative mirrors over that ŵall so it's less visible. The room appears quite dark (although that may be the pic!), so I'd paint the walls in savage ground by farrow and ball ( do get fabric samples first though as there are more paint colours available!). In future I would probably change the carpet (although it's nice) to a pale neutral as it's probably sucking the light. Maybe also paint the door as that looks quite dark. Using the pic posted from your Idea book I'd use that as inspiration using cream, pale bronze, antique gold etc. it's hard to tell if full length curtains will hang properly next to the wardrobe, if not, go for Roman blinds in a cream/natural floral, damask, bird toile etc. it's easy to mix any of these patterns with other florals etc for the bed. Ideally I'd hang the blind outside of the recess so as not to block light but I can't see if that would work. If you're on a budget do look at ebay for blinds or fabric, often designer guild cushions or some of the high street names will also come up. Personally I'd go for plain bed linen and add cushions and a throw mixing plain and patterns in different fabrics. I can't see what light you have but a chandelier would go well with this scheme, you could try bhs.

Wow great feedback! I hate the big bulky shelving above the chest of drawers but we do need shelving so what other options could I go with? I think painting the furniture is a fantastic idea and neutrals are best! We were also thinking for the other side of the bed to get a full length narrow shelving unit as we are stuck for storage space. There's no where else to put the chest of drawers either at the moment! For curtains/blinds-when u say outside of the recess do you mean where the curtains currently are? I have loads of ideas on Pinterest! What paint would be best for the furniture also? Thanks again!

This is a neat idea for a full length shelving unit. You can probably paint the squares in the background onto the wall.
