Kitchens Design Dilemma Home Decorating

adding some character to my kitchen PLEASE HELP!

I have almost finished the final parts of installing my kitchen but have hit a mental block. I want to add some colour to the kitchen as it is very grey and white. But want don’t want it too bold. Also I’m gonna have two fairly large walls (9ft wide approx) and was wondering how to add some character to them. Please help me

Large empty walls are perfect for adding some fun personal touches. A Gallery wall with pics of your familly etc or that collection of old dishes..some Art, so many possibilities to bring a sense of warmth and fun into a space. I've attached a few pics for inspiration.

Hi Mary, I'd say remove the wall tiles and replace them with a glass splashback the whole way round or have a matching granite upstand put in and simply paint the walls. Splashbacks are my favourite as they tend to add some light to the kitchen thanks to its reflective surface. Also another idea would be to play around with lighting, which is getting more and more popular in kitchens now, such as LEDs under your wall cabinets, on top of your cabinets or along the plinth. The added lighting just adds a little something special to the kitchen and more importantly it doesn't have to cost the earth either! Another lighting option could be to go with the industrial lighting craze right now and get something put right above the island which would really add character to the kitchen too! Marius

Hello Oris1978, What I would start with is painting the walls... Try a really lovely chalky cream.. Little Greene do a nice one called whitening.. It is bright and chalky and much nicer than a plain white.. Then get some nice roller blinds (for budget) Also in a light colour cream or white or something to compliment any flooring you might get... I see you don't want to spend a lot but I want to suggest a flooring. The tiles are not bad but if they are damaged then I would suggest a Lino. May not be exciting you think but when you have looked at the options from Sinclair Till, I think you will change your mind.. Images attached... There are many and I have chosen a few really fantastic designs along with a plainer one, so you get the idea. The floor space is quite big so make the most of that... Move the table and chairs further into the centre of the room... I'd even suggest painting them as well...Take the sofa out of the kitchen and move the other table to where the sofa is, if it's a table.. Can't quite tell? I'd place the items like toaster and kettle nearer so they are grouped together, thus more practical... Maybe invest in something that isn't white. I have to say one of the best investments for the kitchen has to be a Dualit toaster in Chrome! It's a style beauty! A good kettle to go with it and you're set. Dualit does a good kettle too I think it's called Architect? It too is chrome **If floor tiles are good then blinds to match in a sheer fabric not blackout as sheer is lighter and more subtle... The painting... it's lonely! Get something else or move it to a smaller piece of wall... It's really too small in that location... Box in the meter and those bits and all is neat, paint the same colour as the walls.. Voila! : ))

I would have moved both the radiators before putting the flooring down, they're in the way of furniture placement. Maybe consider taking up the flooring and moving them. The one that's in the extension by the garden could go on the wall to the right of the doors. The one opposite the island i would also move to the wall adjacent to the black sofa.

I'd get rid of the black sofa and put something lighter in colour and a little more modern / less chunky in there. Then you can put a small dining area in the extension.

What are your favourite colors?

The 'long walls' could use some color, all other walls and ceiling the same white. Buy new longer (white) drapes or panel curtains (white with some pattern).

Moving the radiators would indeed be nice, but replacing them for vertical could improve the look too. My guess is you could remove the near the island and have some more watts in the other. (There are calculators for this online. If you're home is insulated, go for the lowest number.)

A soft ‘neutral’ pink like Farrow and Ball calamine paint could look nice with the grey and white and your lovely copper lights.

I think the key thing here Jack is your budget.

Since this is a DIY project. You cannot go wrong with Getting Chalkboard paint and go creative on the wall with art deco, depending on your personal interests.

If you have a little bit more budget the next option would be choose a single color to tie the whole space together

Some thing like Baby Blue, Persimon, Yellow or if you are feeling courages get try Hot Lave

Remember this is only a tiny touchup not a highlight feature. The three places to put the color is

1- The Walls behind the television

2- The Splashback

3- The lights

Total Cost

a-) 3 New Pendant Lights b-) Tub of Paint c-) Glass Splashback d-) Splashback adhesive = £250-325 and one afternoon and a tub of tea.

It's a new kitchen so you want something durable because good cooked food has a bad habit of getting everywhere!
