Tile/border help!

Originally I had intended all tiles (20x60cm) format to run horizontal to the floor. The window wall was to be brown with decor borders framing the window, behind the sink 80 wide with decor border and the shower wall 30cm brown with decor border. The rest of the walls to be tiled white. However my husband advised the tiler to run the sink tiles vertical as this resulted in less wastage. Should I tile the window wall vertically to match the sink/shower area or continue as I had originally planned? Any advice would be appreciated. I have enclosed pictures of our bathroom and a photo of the tiles as displayed in the showroom.

If you want the look in the showroom photo, you need to do all tile in the same direction. If you started with vertical, you need to stick with vertical. It might be a blessing in disguise since it will make your ceilings appear taller. On the floor, make the long end of the tile run with your longest wall.

Thank you for your suggestions and ideas! I love some of the more daring/colourful ideas, but I don't think I'm, personally, bold enough to go with such a contemporary look. I'm going to stick to a traditional/modern style and use large (4" x 8") white subway tiles and dark grey grout. I'm thinking of using a dark grey paint around the kitchen walls and then a lighter shade around the rest of the room, with maybe the dark grey on the wall behind the TV too. Will be a few more weeks before that's all done, but I'll post a picture when I eventually get there. Thanks again!

We are thinking maybe a terazzo tile of some sort- one that integrates the red, black and white, and beige (from the wood floors adjacent). This could pull it all together, for one cohesive room! See images.

I think you will be fine with that choice in a small bathroom and I'm sure it's actually relatively common. Here is one example I found on houzz and it's a combination with have in our small carriage house bath as well. For floor we did white hexagons with a repeating black pattern. http://houzz.com/photos/740269
