Gold/Beige sofa dilemma!

Hi all!

I'm currently studying interior design and I'm having a bit of creative block with this sofa. I bought this sofa a week ago as I fell in love with it's shape, it's of excellent quality and I got it at a bargain price. I thought it would be easy to re-design my living room around this colour, but it just doesn't fit in with the look I want.

I absolutely love traditional styled homes. I also love the vintage look. If I could have the sofa re-upholstered in an off white colour I would, but it's not financially viable right now.

Our floors are also brand new - They're a lovely dark wood with hints of red. I'd like to go with a gold and red theme, but in a room this small I'm a little hesitant. I like bright clean whites etc.

Any ideas are much appreciated!

I'm loving the colours used in this Liberty fabric.
The gold in the fabric matches your sofa.
You could take inspiration from the colours used by Liberty.

That is pretty. I did consider some olive greens.

I really do wish I could have gotten a lighter color with this sofa. I really love clean whites and crisp interiors.

HI -- Well the wallpaper was just done so there is no changing that , soooo I think you should paint the rest of that wall the same white as the white background of the wallpaper and paint fireplace mantel too. Then have two small matching cabinets painted the blue from the paper or the leaf color placed on each side of the fireplace. . Then have white or glass shelves above , maybe three is best . Now the rest of the room painted the exact color of your sofa . Because the room looks small I think it would look best to have the sofa blend into the walls color wise. Now just keep some of your room accents in the blue color but not too much. Remember not to clutter the shelves and if you don't want the shelves then have a large painting on each side and have a big round mirror over the mantel and keep the small items off the mantel and onto the side cabinets .

One problem is that your curtains aren't full enough for the wide window. Houzz might have a formula but I found one here: http://www.ehow.com/way_6038775_many-should-hung-double-window_.html. Also, try this: remove the tie backs and let the curtains fall naturally. That should help a little with the fullness. Then buy pillows that bring in those colors. You can also add color to that bookcase by painting it the same color as the wall for a more built-in look. Add more collectibles or books to the shelves. Then find a large graphic poster for that long wall. Next pull the sofa and chairs closer to the fireplace so that they have at least two feet on the rug. Pull the end table closer to the furniture. Drop the picture on the right of the window down about 5". It's way too high.

I love dark walls and I think your hall with the shiny floors and the right finish on the wall make it special. You already have the wrought iron, which definitely dictates a certain look. I hesitate to recommend a specific color from my monitor, but look at the BM colors in the 1037’s through the 1078’s and see if there is something there which looks good with the tile.

Hi. Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room.... Make or have a slipcover made. Look at Betsy speert blog. She does this to all her furniture. She's a big name decorator who uses vintage style.

Emmie, I don't think you made a mistake at all with this sofa. To me, it looks camel colored, not gold, which is a very traditional color that seemingly has never gone out of style. Goes with pretty much any other color, given the right hue. Lisadew is on the right track, I think. Interesting fabric pattern but not trendy. Different pillows would change the look entirely. No need to pay to change it. Get your design hat on...show us what you got!

I love the sofa shape and I think you're fine with the color. Take a pic to class and let it be their project. And you can always slipcover it.

Sofa seems old Hollywood glam to me. Maybe play up that aspect of the room.

I can see why you liked the sofa. It's very pretty and has nice, classic lines. Here is a room you might find inspiring as it has neutral sofas with red and crisp whites. Good luck!

Love the couch! I know you said you liked clean white lines ... but this color looks fabulous with grays and browns too.

Don't over think it - your looking at the sofa and nothing else - layer your living room - meaning; use pillows and a throw to emphasise your tastes, the cream sofa is a piece of the entire design, not the entire design.

Emmie, I ordered an ultrasuede loveseat from pottery barn. It looked saddle brown (medium brown) in the sample but when it arrived and the sun hit it.....it looked like my hair color...blonde ! I called pottery barn and found I couldn't get another custom slip cover, so the PB decorator added two pillows (orange) and a center rectangular pillow in a print. I then added a darker throw on the arm. It has grown on me, and my room is just lighter than I had originally planned.
I used orange, as this was in my rug and had been my theme color. I have since found a painting on etsy with a touch of the same color in it as the sofa (with many other colors). Your sofa will work for you and probably won't show dirt as easily as a white sofa. I like the colors in the pictures that regina5697 and indianpatti showed you. Good Luck!

Love your floors good job. Good luck in design school. I find working in the field is more help than taking classes. There are many furn stores that hire designer or want to be designers, for their stores. To help clients, and go to their homes, to help them buy furn. You can gain so much knowledge this way . And make a living at the same time. Working as a assist to a designer, is a great way to break in to the field. A lot of designers will hire from the school. I'm sure you have a job board. Check it for even part time work. It pays off. Now your room. Like your sofa. Good color to work with. But, don't forget the small stuff. Like window covers, art, area rugs and accessories. Putting a room together is the hardest thing to do. It's very easy to put a sofa and chairs in a room. It's the accessories that bring a room together. Study a designer you relate too on TV. There are many I used to love Candice Olsen. Not sure if she is on the air. She does have books out. Study them see how rooms are pulled together. Then copy it for your room. Color is a matter of taste. Look for unusual things to add to your room. A simple thing like stacking some books together with a art item on top,is inexpensive and space filling look. You don't have to spend a lot. Rug, pillows window panels are found everywhere. Unless you have unlimited budget, can shop, Ikea, Pier One, World Market, Z galleries, West Elm. Even some deals at Restoration Hardware. Sometimes just go window shopping at above, to get ideas, find fun things. Don't rush. Take your time and find just the right thing for you. Good luck. That being said go a 6x9 rug in a traditional look with yr red and gold print. Stay with those colors just go different tones. Going the dark reds over bright is way to go in traditional. The bold colors work better with a modern look. Mix up design, size and prints in pillows. Panels on end of windows with a bamboo shade in dark brown. A inexpensive look that is timeless. Panels could be a gold velvet, that will give you a more traditional look. Move media for TV closer to firepl. If in budget go a round or square 24" coffee table in glass to show off rug. Over firepl a big 36" sun burst mirror hang 7" from top of mantel. TJMax has great price. Also ck them for pillows, rugs. They have a great return policy, which is very important. Always ck store policy on returning. Because you will be returning, it's part of the job. I will buy. 3 rugs at a time, to try in clients home. That's OK. Things look different in different light. Also coffee tables should be no more than 18" from front of sofa.

Is that a rug in black and white? How big.? Could work with sofa if big enough. No small items on floor or walls. Always go big hang low.
