Help with my living room

hi all,
can i get some suggestions on what coolur paint/wallpaper to paint his wall to enhance my mirror? I really dont know what i was thinking of with the original wallapaer, and as u can see i am trying different wallpaper at the moment. i really dont know what i am at, im useless at this. my couch is black, curtains purple and floor dark walnut so the room is dark and i would like to brighten it up. a silver paper to enhance mirror?? too cold??

Seems to me your sofa looks dark purple/eggplant in color. I would do your fireplace wall in eggplant/purple color and the rest in soft grey, and tie it all together with a great area rug.

Is the chandelier thing seeming a bit small for the room or is it just me? Given that your walls are plain, the sofa is plain how about a patterned rug? Do you like Persian rugs? I find that dark green wainscotting too heavy and would paint it a lighter color. Given you have just moved in I assume you are planning to be there a while. If you like traditional style do you want a fairly safe color scheme re walls and curtains, keeping future resale in mind. Or are u happy to decorate according to your tastes? The mirror seems a bit small to me.

I'm thinking the same way Darzy,maybe I will go with all the same or find a nice tile. I am getting ready to refit my kitchen so may need some help.i am thinking of a grey coloured farrow and ball colour on the bottom cabinets and white on the top. On the back wall of the kitchen I have a brick chimney hood so this time I would like to do something different and not as bulky looking so was thinking of doing a small mantle and just putting a downdraft behind my cooking hob if anyone can advise does the downdrafter really work?

I think as well as adding life to the room with a different wall colour, you need to add some textures. But you have a great base to work from - well chosen sofa, floor, fireplace, etc. Great! The colour I would suggest you use in this space is called Sedgemoor by a company called Francesca’s Paints. I know you can’t get them over there in Ireland, but I have posted a picture of a room painted in this shade - perhaps you can get Dulux to colour match if you like it? You could then add a few cushions in natural colours, like dark brown, and possibly something like this from John Lewis: http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-luce-cushion/p519627?colour=Blackberry. I would also add some pattern/texture/interest into the scheme through cushions - I really love the idea of layering up a pile of these, like in the photo on the Heal’s website (also posted): http://www.heals.co.uk/content/ebiz/heals/invt/583041/583041_l1.jpg. Then another thing you could do is add a rug, I would probably go for a textured brown one like this tonal rug from Habitat http://www.habitat.co.uk/mohit-large-brown-tonal-rug-170-x-240cm/rugs//fcp-product/24124. I see you have black and white theme going on ...you need to add some color to that fireplace wall..Terracotta paint color will give some nice color and you can add some similar color accent pieces ...and your mirror will also add dimension...

Your fireplace is gorgeous Love the ivory colored mantle and posts with the black hearth and surround. If you choose to wall paper behind it, possibly something more subtle like the silver tones you were suggesting, with a light creamy grey wall paint that would co-ordinate with the paper. Or, my preference, but that is OMO, just paint the entire space the wall color. Might make the space feel larger.

Use a slightly textured wall paper, slightly is the key word here, in Gray/silvery grey. Then use Eggplant, silver and maybe some white accessories. Beautiful room.

I would do a light gray/lavender combination for this wall. There are many wall papers out there that have this combination with a subtle texture and pattern that would look gorgeous. The light color will soften the room a bit and you can do a light, light gray for the other walls. Good luck!

Your fireplace and hearth are glossy, I would not put anything more shiny in the room, sorry not the mirror either. I would consider something to soften the room. I need to think this one out more, tough one....

@margo, I think the other way to go is finding the right purple gray to tie couch and curtains in room.

The wallpaper pattern diminish the look of that beautiful mirror, I think that the grey color that Mark is showing in the picture (above) would look superb for your whole room. The high component unit to the left is taking too much importance , could you replace it with a much lower unit used only for components, placing your vases etc... elsewhere ? also the picture frame on the left is much too high, align the top of it with the mantel. Can your drapery rod be extended on each side of the window ? by a few inches (4-5") . Leaving your drapes hanging straight on either side . It would lighten up the room and show off the beautiful pattern of the fabric. You have an excellent start, this room will look great. Good luck .

@dclostboy, I am with you on finding a nice soft gray for the walls but not with any purple in it (mauve comes to mind ). Then maybe a textured charcoal gray seagrass on the fireplace wall.

Mark, that is what I thought you meant, but I just can't pull the trigger on any purple on the walls. Not saying that if I saw it done, I wouldn't change my mind. Seeing is believing, and you have great taste;)

I love the wall paper. It adds character to the room and make a statement of who you are. However, I would paint the rest all the walls either the SW sensuous gray or the SW enigma.

Margo, no one would dare to gang up on you, let me at'em. I do like your charcoal idea for fireplace wall, but I think the grays can be very cold, so I prefer the warmer purple grays, light or dark, to warm it up a little. You know I think you have impeccable taste. Testify!!!

I think it is a matter of who likes apples and who likes oranges. I am in Margo's corner on this one....but it is JM humble O. The purple tones of the grass mat wall paper nice, more modern, the gray tones, a little more traditional. So either will achieve a nice look, it's a matter of taste.
