I am doing up my living room but as I just built my home and spent most of my funds my in laws have given me their old suite of furniture! Not particularly my taste and so I am completely stuck for ideas! I don't even know what colour paint to use for the walls or for the carpet! I need it done for Christmas so please help me!!!!!! It's a big room! 39 metres squared in area!
Not my favorite sofa but it isn't terrible and doesn't seem completely unrelated to the architecture. Maybe keep the new stuff to a minimum for now and save your money to buy some things you will want to keep?
I hope they gave you more than the one sofa. You'll have to decide whether you're going to build the room around this sofa, or take your own direction with furnishings and colors you like.
Sorry they came me the sofa and two matching arm chairs. I think I will just paint the room and keep furniture to a minimum until I can replace the suite of furniture. However am completely stuck as to what colours to put with it! I was thinking creams and olive green?
Looking at the oak doors and baseboards, I'd say go for a warm white (no cream, but a bit tan or olive -ish). Neutrals will last longer too, regardless of the funiture and decoration you will use. If the dog is yours, I'd use my budget for a faux wood ceramic floor and worry less about furniture, replace the old stuff once you're lived in the house (hint: slip cover). And walls can be painted afterwards, so focus on the floor (and window treatments) instead of the furniture and start out with offwhite walls.
I would go neutral and don't focus too much on designing your room around the furniture if you don't like it! When you have the money you can replace the furniture but you dont want to have to also redo the room!
