Creating a kitchen/diner - possible without extending?

We have just bought a lovely townhouse as our next family home. It has a fantastic living room & study on the first floor - but the kitchen downstairs just won't work for us without dining space. We therefore intend to knock through to the existing ground floor bedroom to create a bigger space - but after playing around on DIY kitchens planner, I am worried it still won't be big enough for the type of space we would like. I know an island is impossible but I was hoping to fit a peninsula and corner bench with oval dining in the existing bedroom space. Do you think this is 1) possible 2) the best approach?

Well, you could certainly provide some counter height stools without adding onto the counter. I would make the stools simple ones that don't call attention to themselves. Look at how the ones below are there to be sat upon but there's no overhang. The height you will need is called a counter stool. Or you have space for 2 at each end of the island with just a big of an overhang. People just like a place to perch while they chat with you while you're cooking. White stools would blend right into the island and be inconspicuous.

Shelves above the stove , just one more thing to clean, whatever you put there gets filthy. Love the blue color, the nice thing is in this space you could use any color. I love glass subway tiles they are timeless and come in some wonderful colors.That penquin paper is fun , how about in the bathroom or a childs room.

Thanks. Beautiul space. Can you please take a photo of the wall that is across from the island? -there is no overhang on the counter...so I am not seeing stools there on either the long portion of the island or the shorter portion by the window. -if you mean by the window, there is a door on one side and an oven on the other.....hence it is a traffic way,,,,,,you don't want stools there I am not sure why you feel the need to put something there. You might consider art on the wall across from the island to ground that wall. Need a photo.

Hi, advice gratefully received. Love our new house, but the ground floor layout is not great. Long narrow kitchen facing east, garden is big so scope to extend. As it stands you come in from the hall into the lounge to get to the kitchen. I would like to have some separation so that the lounge can be closed when desired. Perhaps some double doors? I was thinking to use a chunk of the lounge and knock through into the kitchen which would also allow more light. Lounge is lovely and light, kitchen is dark after lunch. Ideal solution would be a side extension, but drains and pipes in the way so worried about the cost.. Would only require about a metre wide along the actual kitchen which I would then face towards the garden and create a sitting area. Any ideas welcome P.S. Conservatory is a junk room at the moment, facing a fence on the right hand side. The garage is used as a utility.

Thanks for the suggestion. I can see how that would create a muchhh better space - but for lifestyle reasons we really need to keep the toilet & shower wetroom so unfortunately isn't an option. I appreciate the thought though.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this, Sarah. It's almost identical to what I planned out via DIY Kitchens so great to see I'm on the right track. It's tight but I think may work. I was considering keeping the door into the existing bedroom, and having this as glass to bring more light into the hallway.

What is the space lie on thed next floor? Would it be feasible to make the current kitchen into a bedroom - study with laundry room, And move thekitchen up to oin the social space?

can you relocate the shower room to the back half of the garage? Is that location directly below another bathroom?
