Renters Living Room Ideas

I just moved into this maisonette. I’d appreciate some help and advice in making this feel like a home rather than a rented place. I could do something with the empty wall space but not quite sure yet. Also, I’m not exactly sure of the paint color, any suggestions on how I can balance all this cream color? Thank you.

Hi Mandy… without seeing the whole entirety of this room, here are one or two ideas in how you can finish that space from this angle. The unit can be a stand alone version that can be taken down should you decide to move on.

Do you have any furniture? Does the room have a window? Can you take a photo from where the tv is too, preferably in daylight? What styles do you like? Finally, I assume you can’t paint?

Whilst you have minimal furniture, play with your positioning of possible furniture by taping out the floor to give you an idea of the best layout. If you have seating in mind, get the dimensions and tape away! Don’t be in a rush to fill the space, allow yourself time to think your purchases through. I would suggest a taller upright lamp could be an effective addition to offer a gentler light option.

Two ideas. Both times I would block up the entrance to the second half of the room to make more usuable space. Both ideas have a island with a dining table attached. Obviously these drawings are not to scale but everything should fit in. I would utilise the kitchen cuboards for utilities- intergrated appliances. If you can dont forget to use the space under your stairs as well. Also use the long wall at the bottom of the stairs for extra storage and alcoves.

You said you bought a new cream Queen Anne chair , so is that in addition to the striped one as well? IF yes, then you may be tied into a purple/brown/gold theme. The black furniture will work in the room. IF you are replacing the striped chair with the off white Queen Anne , then you could do purple/ gray/ black colors. Here are some inspiration ( color wise) photos: Purple with brown Purple with gray/black. I think an area rug will tie all your colors together , so find a large one that works in the color scheme you choose.

I think the only place you could put a tv is probably the corner by the window...over the fireplace is probably too high. a walnut floor and new fresher paint colour would be lovely, would you consider painting the skirting boards and fireplace white or off white to modernise them a bit? we've painted the skirting in our living room (also a walnut floor) and it looks so much better than before. (Have yet to get around to the rest of the house!!)

Hi, I am amazed by some of the advice I have read on here so I hope you can share your wisdom on our living room. We're mid renovation and here we are so far: I would love to have balance on the fireplace wall. Any ideas? I have thought about a large piece of art to the left of the chimney but the TV also will go to the left. (I'd rather keep TV away from chimney breast). How would you balance the window dressings also? I like the idea of very high sheers but will that work and from wall to wall or just over the windows? The room is 6.1 metres x 5.4 metres. It's North facing so this is as bright as it gets! We're in the process of picking a fireplace too. How would you bring balance to the room?

I have the basics now. I hope this gives you a better idea of the layout of the room. There’s also an empty wall to the right of the tv that I’m thinking of making a reading nook.

Does your sofa fit on the wall opposite the window? If it does, then you could put your tv in the corner at an angle. This way you won’t get glare on your screen and the window won’t be blocked by your sofa.

That’s very interesting. I think the sofa would fit but it’ll be a very tight fit .

Are you able to paint the room or alternatively the landlord do so? i can see a number of scuffs on one wall which should really have been freshened before you moved in.

The cream clashes with the carpet so it’s either a rug or paint I think. A rug could add pattern or texture though

AI is not behaving but you could just cover the bottom of the window with a cafe curtain if the sofa doesn’t fit on the opposite wall. Move the tv down a little and add a large plant in a woven basket. A glass coffee table would work in the space, I went for oval to break up the lines.. Pull the sofa away from the window a little and add a floor lamp (AI shrunk the sofa instead!)

i might add a table lamp on the tv unit, if not is that a side table next to the sofa? I might add more cushions on the sofa in different textures to add the cosy feel

Can i just check the sofa cushion colour though? Can’t work out if it’s green

I like the paint color you suggested and a rug would definitely add some pattern. I’ll have to get a color that complements or brings life to the room. Any suggestions on
colors for a rug? I can’t move the tv down a little as that’s the wall behind it but I love the large plant in woven basket. It also adds texture to the room. The oval coffee table is a great idea. I plan to buy more cushions for the sofa. The sofa cushion is covered in a light green cover. I can play around with cover colors for the sofa. This is actually so helpful and I’m really grateful. Thank you.

Maybe some warm earthy neutrals with tan and chocolate for contrast? You could go a bit lighter on the walls for more contrast with the cushions.

I’m assuming the really blue part of the carpet is reflecting from the throws etc as the corners look a pale silver? It might be worth looking at Zara Home. the patterned rug is from there but look at their cushions and throws too, they’re great for texture

An 'intimate cove' with warm earthy tones and your light green sofa sounds incredibly cozy!

As a renter, a big patterned rug and textured cushions are the best ways to inject personality without losing your deposit.

To save your back (and prevent any more wall scuffs from moving furniture around!), try scanning the room with Beavom. I used it to virtually test layout combos and see how different rugs and coffee tables looked next to my sofa before buying anything. It makes planning so much easier! Good luck!
