what can I plant here

living room window looks over our very neglected courtyard. Please suggest what can we do on this ledge which currently just collects leaves from neighbours tree.

Lovely little space this, shame it's just collecting leaves at the moment when it could be doing so much more.

Is that bay mostly shady? Looks like it from the tree cover and the height of those walls, but worth confirming what housemouse10 asked below — makes a difference to what'll actually thrive there.

If it is on the shadier side, I'd stop fighting it and lean into it — swap that bare ledge for a proper planted trough. Ferns, heucheras, a bit of Sarcococca for evergreen structure, all things that'll do well in shade and will actually help catch the leaves rather than you sweeping them up every week. Chuck some ivy or vinca underneath so you're not staring at bare soil all winter. If you do get a bit of sun creeping in, Choisya's a good shout too, or a compact Photinia if you want more height.

Also worth topping the whole thing with a dark slate or gravel mulch instead of soil — looks smarter, and any leaves that do land just sit on top instead of rotting into the ground.

I think your colors are restful so I would work with those and not pop a color. Maybe some interesting artwork that had some color in it, but I think you should go for a more elegant calm look. By the way, I like the chandelier you have with the fireplace. I think I would paint the lower part of your wall the same blue as is in the top part. Then I would add some black accents in glass and lamps. Curtains that have a sheen or gold thread would be nice.

I understand what you want to do, so here's my suggestion, if it fits.....I'd move the couch under the mirror. Move table to the center of the kitchen, like an island. Sounds like it's two adults and two toddlers, so I'd definitely remove two of those chairs. Are your kids in high-chairs, if so move the other two chairs out too. Basically you want four chairs not six. Move them to a garage, basement or another room. Put the chairs around two or three sides of the table. I'd leave the side near the stove and washing machine(?) open. TV would mount to the right of the back door. See if that would work. Either way, it's going to be a tight space. Post pics please.

So I think we have decided to stick with the layout that we have and just block up the double doors. I hope it and it will be nice because I have lost a lot of sleep worrying about it. Thanks for letting me post here.

You could plant a mature fast growing hedge such as Griselinia (some people call them weeds as they grow so fast and are relatively cheap) or plant a few mature trees like evergreen oak and prune to shape each year. If your budget allows, you could go for espaliered/pleached versions.

This ledge looks to be some height as I can see a basket ball hoop - how high up is this ledge? If you were to place a planter on it, any plants would covered in leaves each autumn and it would be too high to either water or maintain. Can we see a photo of the actual courtyard floor to see what you have done with that?
