Lighting depends on what you put there. Photos would help to give an idea of size, whether you have other storage.

I wouldn’t rule out aomething like the first idea as this still gives a feeling of space. Somewhere to put on shoes like the 2nd would work, Many people just have a console or chest there in which case you may just want a table lamp

Hi Minnie - thank you so much for your feedback. Unfortunately I have not got any photos - the staircase is being made - I have a drawing which I attach. I need to agree my lighting plan before it goes in which is difficult for me. I will have a coat cupboard elsewhere in the hall and do not want to put in extra storage - just something decorative - there won't be room to sit underneath it other wise a seat to put on my shoes would have been ideal. I would really like to keep it quite open to make the hallway feel more spacious and so I am thinking maybe some decorative pots or something

A pot could work.

i know you said you didn’t want extra storage but something decorative like this could also work. You could then add a wall light.

Or going with your pot idea, a couple of mini recessed lights will open the space up and make it feel bigger when it’s dark
