The master bedroom in my house is an extension built on the side of the house by the previous owners. First they built a rectangular kitchen and later a bedroom above it. The bedroom has windows opposite each other, one looking to the front of the house and the other to the back. It’s is a bit too small.
Length-wise, facing the door into the bedroom, there’s a double bed flanked by two small bedside tables on each side of it, each flanked by two fitted 90cm wardrobes built into the corners of the room. It works but is very tight.
Width-wise, there is just enough room to get past the foot of the bed with a radiator there fitted in a small alcove made by removing bricks from the original outside wall. (The windows are in these shorter walls.)
I’ve always said that the room should be a bit longer and wider. Now I’m wondering if that can be fixed. I’m wanting a porch outside the back door and think it should be possible to build a small single story extension. On the ground floor there would be the porch and above it, by moving the bedroom wall, I’d get a wider bedroom.
The real question is how to push back the wall behind the bed. I’m probably only talking about a metre, perhaps two metres max. I don’t want to change the kitchen below so am wondering if it’s possible to extend into the air, as it were, so that there’s a bit of an overhang above the drive below. I can’t have anything to support this as I need to be able to put a car in the drive so it would be a bit like having a balcony at the side of the house, except that it would be the whole room jutting out. Is this possible please and would it be disproportionately expensive?
Thanks in advance for comments.
