Fireplace surround and tiled hearth help

Looking for some advice on what to do with this fireplace surround and tile hearth please.

1) Is there any way of cleaning the surround (looks like it might be marble), or can I paint it?

2) We're getting the floor carpeted (this is a bedroom), can we remove the tiles on the floor, to then level the floor and lay carpet on top? Looks like there's concrete under the tiles. Otherwise we'll need to put a bar around it to keep the carpet in place and I'm not sure if this is going to look nice.

3) I really don't like the colour of the tiles, can I paint over the ones in the insert, or do something else with them?

For your fireplace surround, you can try cleaning it with a mild dish soap and water solution or use a marble cleaner if it’s marble. If you prefer painting it, just make sure to clean and lightly sand the surface before applying a primer and heat-resistant paint. For the tiles on the floor, removing them and leveling the concrete underneath is a great idea before installing the carpet, but be ready to patch any uneven spots in the concrete. If you don’t want to remove the tiles, a trim around the carpet might help create a cleaner look. For the tiles in the insert, you can either paint them with heat-resistant tile paint, use tile decals, or replace them entirely if you want a complete change.

I agree with everything said so far. Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Color, maybe you should decide on furniture first?

Hi Janis Unfortunately I am not in the Boston area - I live in Ireland! Yes there are red items in 3 of the main rooms, the kitchen, sitting room and tv room (library) - although we have pared those back now and it's not as overwhelming. thanks for all your help everyone, i really feel like it's made a big difference and am excited to finish the tv room and then refresh the play room. do you think I should move the piano to the sitting room? and would the jazz painting work in the tv room? speak later, thanks!

Do you plan on painting your walls? I hope so. If yes than could also change your plan later. Be sure to look at the entire room before deciding how to decorate just one wall. I would consider a greige tone on the walls. As you have natural wood baseboards..(I like them), I would add tall shelves, the color of your trim to each of the alcoves. The bottom of the alcoves could be closed cabinets. Your TV could sit on one of them. Leave the backs of the shelves open for the paint to show through. You could display other art (including paintings) on them as well as books, photos, etc. I would not put a mantle above the fireplace as it looks more contemporary to be a clean look. I would place a very large framed round mirror over the fireplace, or a very tall vertical one, If every mirror were to only reflect a great view..there would be very few of them anywhere.

Hi Travis and SoYoung - thanks for mentioning the fireplace.....I was thinking that I would keep it simple with a wood shelf over it and a large piece of Art but I now think it might be a bit lost. Would love some ideas as it needs to work with the built-ins which are slightly domineering. Also, Liam_Boyle - agree re the unbalance. The TV will be staying but I have a lovely coffee table and 2 identical sofas coming so I'm hoping to lay out symmetrically in the room. Will keep 1 of the chairs. Hope this will balance up. Thanks.
