Maybe give it a good scrub, especially the grout. See if it appeals more in a cleaner state.

I think most fireplaces look great with a mirror. Perhaps a round mirror with candlestick lamp lights on either side. Make it cosy. Avoid too modern, it becomes cold, clinical or bland..

Plants on either side to soften the red bricks. Paint the surrounding walls to compliment the brick colour. Paint the shelf or change it as below photos.

Once you put a rug, plants, lighting and even an armchair, it starts coming alive .

Or If you do not use it as a working fireplace, paint it all white including the mirror. The hearth graphite black.

The top mirror bit looks 1930s and the bottom maybe 70s/80s? You could paint it white or grey if that will go with the decor in the room?

A new shelf will make a difference. Easy to install using hand drill. No need for carpenter. A mirror reflects light, you can get paint specifially for furniture without much preparation.
