Bathroom tiling - plain or patterned on wainscoting?

Hi. Hoping for some input on bathroom tiling.

My bathroom is approx 4m x 2m with the windows on the long side and the door on the short side.

It'll have more a more traditional than modern feel and as you walk in, the bath will be along the short wall at the far end. It'll be against a half height frame which will form a tile width shelf that will provide access to the wall mounted taps. I believe this is called a wainscoting.

I'm trying to decide whether to tile this 'wainscoting' to match the floor tiles or the wall tiles.

The wall tiles will be a plain pearlescent off white (60x20cm) while the floor is going to be a mix of patterned tiles, each 20 x 20cm.

I plan to tile the plain tile full height in the shower area, reducing to half height along the same long wall. But rather than continue round the short wall, I'm thinking of putting the patterned floor tiles half way up the wainscoting. The rest of the wall above will be painted plaster with a large round mirror.

My thinking is that as you walk in it will provide more contrast than just a white bath in front of an off-white tile. But hopefully it won't be completely 'in your face' because it's be partly obscured by the bath.

It would mean the patterned tile meets the plain tile in the far corners of the room, but since they're both 20cm high I think that won't pose too many grout line challenges.

Tiles and rough sketch included, thanks in advance for your thoughts

It's not called 'wainscoting', that's an American term for wall panelling. I like the idea of half height patterned tiles behind the bath, but they are not necessary on the long wall. If you like traditional style bathrooms you could have wall panels though (not wainscoting 🙂).

Hi Sarah L, thanks for your reply and for putting me right about wainscoting - should've checked the Google source :)

Yes, it would only be for the one short wall. And I do like, and did consider, panelling but I want this room to be tiled. I laid out my tile samples behind the bath this afternoon and quite liked it, so am pleased you like the idea too.
