Renovating Flooring Design Dilemma

We are in the process of renovating our chalet bungalow, and was wondering what is everyone's thoughts on flooring, which way would yo go, or would you do something different?

I import tiles from Italy as a business, so there is no question that we are using porcelain. But the hubby and I are coming to a head on the effect. Stone or marble effect? A little info on the project that may help....

The tiles will either be be 60x120, 900x900 or 120x120 depending on what we choose. And will be through the whole downstairs, including bedrooms. Master suite will have full open doorways either side of the bed (floor to ceiling) leading to the ensuite and walk around wardrobe, so you do a big circle around the 3 rooms and end up back in the master suite so same flooring in this area. Also all through the open plan living, dining and kitchen area. The kitchen, we are thinking either very dark green or navy shaker style with bronze handles etc. and marble counter, back wall and island (white with grey and gold veins to compliment the kitchen). Husband likes a white marble effect with grey veins.

I personally think a light/white stone effect will go with anything we do in any of the rooms.

The only place that the floors will be different is the family bathroom and wc.

Personally I prefer anything stone to marble due to the perceived warmth. I really like the colours of virtually all types of stone due directly to the warm colour choices. This gives a broad range of decorating options. Marble can be warm but if its cool then it can clash with off white and warmer colours. Warmer colours are in vogue at the moment and if that doesn't matter then fine, but the cool grey trend that included pure whites, greys and blues has pretty much disappeared. My kitchen is walnut and 12 years old so I'm glad it's a classic but it's worth giving consideration to these things. As you say, stone goes with anything, I totally agree and it looks lovely with blue,

My step daughter has marble effect porcelain tiles downstairs and it is very “white” and she complains it’s a nightmare to keep clean as it shows every little speck of dirt. Stone effect is much nicer I feel, or how about wood effect porcelain. It looks really good, my sister has it in her kitchen with a charcoal grey shaker kitchen. Here’s some ideas

Hello the days are brightening up by now and I'm sure the room is looking less drab for it. However I think furniture rearranging will work wonders. You seem to have nice low window sills: show them off. If the sofa goes to the left between window and built-in unit you'll have a view out to the garden and more light in the room. Equally: can you fit the piano between the radiator and the double doors? Again: more light through the window. Low sills are a god-send, and so many of us are stuck with high ones. The room will feel more spacious with a good view to outdoors. The armchairs then: one to the left of the fireplace and one between the other window and piano. TV then between the two windows. (No shine on the screen) Does that fit maybe? Or do you need all five seats facing the TV? I rather like those stripy cushions. Can you find a striped wallpaper in matching colors and with an irregular pattern repeat for your accent wall? if going with wood floors how about a sheepskin rug for each of your doggies? Black or white. One last detail. A lower table for your side lamps would be good: At sofa arm or seat height. Coffee table could work in corner between window and new sofa position. Btw: I liked the suggestion to replace the cupboard doors above the fish tank with full-height ones. In some kitchen shops you can find ready-painted, wooden, panel doors that might fit. It's a long shot but you could be lucky. It would brighten up the corner if you got a light colour.

not alot happening at the moment, its winter! alotta rain, lotta. but i am bedding down to get this over with and maybe in the spring the spirits will rise once more. i hope so. i would love to feel i was doing something to keep my hopes and dreams alive, i dont see what i can do until the spring. when i bring the topic up, especially to those that moved away and came down this neck of the woods, they say they had friends who felt it was too far too and moved back home. i guess thats how i feel, thats what i want and i just want to be a bit more uplifted, i think rain dampens down things a bit!!! santa Ma Margaret!

To put hob on kitchen island or not to put hob on kitchen island?

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

I would also avoid marble and white. Whilst i love marble i think it’s best in small doses with warm elements, otherwise it feels very cold. I would go for a limestone stone effect, personally with a tumbled edge just to give it the look of texture. This would give a timeless look but i assume given the shaker kitchen that’s what you’re after? I would combine with wood elements and rugs in natural fibres

Stone and only if you are having UFH throughout (or live somewhere hot i.e. not UK!)
