Please help me hide the steel column in the kitchen

Hi all, We need to hide a steel column in the kitchen. As you can see from the pictures, we have a steel column of about 200mm depth that we need to hide. My kitchen designer has given me two options.

Have a tall tower which will hide the column completely. We will still have some reduced shelving space inside as the depth of the cabinets is 600mm. We will lose about 200mm. We will also lose some worktop space.
Have the column visible with base cabinet, worktop and wall cabinet. This will retain some worktop space.

In my opinion, the tower option is probably cleaner and looks less fiddly. We will lose some wotktop space but we have a decent size kitchen island so not too concerned about this.

What do you think? Any other ideas apart from these two options would be very welcome.

P.S. I know we have two hobs - one gas and one induction. Reason being we have someone with a pacemaker in the house and they can't use induction hob. Just pre-empting some inevitable comments on this.

The tall unit looks better, and you wouldn't lose much worktop space.

I am sorry to say you don't have room. You are only giving yourself 36" in front of the ovens and only 31" for passage on the opposite side and 42" is not enough between the island and the sink. You might find a smaller 30" wide x 48" moveable stainless steel prep table and placed in the opposite direction, it might work for additional counter surface but not give you the seating you would like.

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

Hi PCmom, sstarr and lefty47. Thanks a million for the comments and views. I'm taking it all on board. PCmom I like the frosted glass idea but I think it will block too much light. We are actually thinking of doing this though in our front sitting room as the window is floor to ceiling. Love the recycled lumber idea and it looks great in the photo - think my husband is hell bent on steel shelving though. sstarr - I'm gonna have a look at your profile pics now but I don't think we will have enough wall space for floor to ceiling pantry. lefty47 we are keeping the appliances for now. It is only the oven - its not the prettiest but its functional and we will most definitely get a new fitted one in the future. There are a few other pictures there of the room around and the left wall - can you not see them? If not I can try and add them again. I'm glad you liked the toilet paper. It took me ages to decide where to place that! What does everyone think about colours of the cabinets? I think we might go for a neutral tone on the wall (unless anyone can visualise anything better?) and either with the steel shelving or possibly the recycles ,lumber idea from PCmom? Agreed that the tall unit looks better and, because the shelves are shallower, would make a great larder cupboard. The wall units look a little cramped though - is there scope for fewer, wider wall cabinets? Or perhaps you could replace some of them with open shelves?

Thanks Jen. We are almost decided now that we will go with the taller unit. We will get this as a complete unit and my fitter will cut the shelves around the wall column. This larder unit is 600mm deep and 600mm wide. The wall column is about 250mm deep and 200mm wide. Which means we will still have decent shelving space. I have a large (120cm) extractor behind those wall cabinets above the hobs, we can't really do any open shelves there.

How will you reach things in the top of the cabinet nearest the window? You’ll probably have to climb on the counter. That’s the cabinet that is a good candidate for open shelving. I don’t think you’ll use it for anything practical so better as a decorative space.

I was actually wondering if I could use that as an open shelf plate rack. But good point. I have a separate dresser for glassware and dinner sets. Space is generally not an issue so maybe a plate rack or something decorative as you suggested.
