Looking for ideas on how to modernise this dark kitchen on a budget. We are not looking to replace the kitchen. It's dark colors aside from the fake wood cabinets and low level of light make it very dark. What would make the most impact for the least £ and that we could diy if possible.
The upper cabinets around the oven are quite dated but not sure if you could manage without the storage?
As the floor and worktop are very dark you could paint the lower cabinets in a mid tone like a warm stone or sand colour with the upper cabinets in a lighter shade of that colour and do the walls the same. Update the handles if you don’t like them.
Would you be up for renewing the wall tiles? Something like zellige tiles in a light colour would bounce light? Do you only have the one light in the room? I’d try and clear the worktops as much as possible. If you paint the cupboards replace the warmth of the wood with wooden chopping boards, a jute runner etc and maybe wood shelves to the left of the oven
I would change the tiles. Replace the multicoloured tiles with neutral white. It will make a huge difference to the light levels. Try this first before changing the worktop or painting the units. Here’s an example of a similar wooden kitchen to yours with white tiles, granted the worktop is white.
