PRO12 months agoA hotly debated topic Tiles vs Wood flooring. Without being too technical, below is a small list of reasons why Wood is often preferred to Tiles.
1. Warmth and Comfort Underfoot
- Physical Warmth: Wood feels noticeably warmer to the touch than tile, which can feel cold and hard. This is a major comfort benefit, especially if you spend a lot of time standing and cooking.
- Visual Warmth: Wood brings a natural, organic, and inviting warmth to a kitchen that tile can struggle to match. It creates a "softer," more lived-in feel compared to the harder, more clinical feel of tile.
2. Comfort and Safety
- Softer Surface: Engineered wood has more give than ceramic or porcelain tile. This is easier on your legs, feet, and back if you stand for long periods.
- Dropped Items: If you drop a glass or plate, an engineered wood floor is more likely to result in the item bouncing rather than shattering into a hundred pieces.

- Floating & Glue Down Floors: If you install a plank engineered wood product, it can be floated over the subfloor (and often over existing flooring). This can be a faster and less messy DIY-friendly project compared to the mortar, grout, and cutting involved with tile.
Tile is often the practical, utilitarian choice. It's incredibly durable and waterproof. Engineered Oak is often the emotional, comfort-driven choice. It adds warmth, beauty, and a feeling of comfort that tile cannot replicate.
Modern engineered wood is far more capable in a kitchen than its reputation suggests. For many people, the aesthetic and comfort benefits far outweigh the need for extra care, making it a fantastic and beautiful choice for a kitchen floor.

Comments (1)You could do a black paint trim over the wooden bits. It would go with the work tops. But not so much with the creamy doors; Or get all of the kitchen units spray painted white? I think if you try to match the floor with the wood of the units in the kitchen you may leave yourself open to a mismatch or even just an overload of wood. I didn't feel there was enough black there as the island top kind of took me by surprise on first seeing it. But could you remove that granite altogether and see how it looks then? Comments (0)Hello everyone! I would love some advice on how to design the kitchen in our new build. As you can see from the design there is a long 4 m window at the front of the house. This will be quite low and will be 50 cm high, so basically it will act a bit as a splash back. So my question is: can I fit in 4 tall cabinets in the kitchen (1 for oven- 60 cm, 2 as pantry - 60 cm each and 1 for the fridge-80 cm)? I am starting to think I need to shorten that window as I would like the keep the feel of the kitchen bright and airy with an island with seating without over crowding the space and not blocking the passage into the living room on the left? Comments (0)Hi, advice gratefully received. Love our new house, but the ground floor layout is not great. Long narrow kitchen facing east, garden is big so scope to extend. As it stands you come in from the hall into the lounge to get to the kitchen. I would like to have some separation so that the lounge can be closed when desired. Perhaps some double doors? I was thinking to use a chunk of the lounge and knock through into the kitchen which would also allow more light. Lounge is lovely and light, kitchen is dark after lunch. Ideal solution would be a side extension, but drains and pipes in the way so worried about the cost.. Would only require about a metre wide along the actual kitchen which I would then face towards the garden and create a sitting area. Any ideas welcome P.S.
