Help updating small living room
We live in a small 1 bed flat with limited space.
Therefore in the living room we have a sofa and bed settee for guests. They are both dark brown leather which I feel date the room
I have tried using throws/cushions but would like the room to look more modern and like the boho/neutral look. I deally we want to keep the sofas as Its difficult to find a good quality sofa bed suite at a decent price.
We are looking to repaint and was thinking just go for white with white wooden blinds to make it look brighter
Any ideas how to improve the room and modernise it?

Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Comments (9)Is the chandelier thing seeming a bit small for the room or is it just me? Given that your walls are plain, the sofa is plain how about a patterned rug? Do you like Persian rugs? I find that dark green wainscotting too heavy and would paint it a lighter color. Given you have just moved in I assume you are planning to be there a while. If you like traditional style do you want a fairly safe color scheme re walls and curtains, keeping future resale in mind. Or are u happy to decorate according to your tastes? Comments (7)Hi Emmeline. Have measured as best I could. The room is 9ft wide and 18ft long going right up to the bay window sill.Imagine you are standing in the doorway. The door opens inwards and to the left. The space between the open door frame and the wall perpendicular i.e. facing the bay window is approx 2ft. On that perpendicular wall are cubes for art work, a tv and a flat chrome edged gas fire. The fire is 1ft of the ground.. The cube unit is 2ft off the ground as is the tv. So not much space to play around with there. Still standing in the doorway on the wall to your right is a longish radiator. At a slight diaganonal opposite you is a window. Height from floor is 2ft6in. Length of window is 3ft Distance ofrom fire place wall to window is 8ft4in. . Distance from end of window to alcove wall of bay window is 3ft2in. There are two small alcove wall each 2ft6in in length. The bay window is a square shape rather than curved. The length is 4ft. Depth 3ft. Height 2ft.6in.from floor. We moved house recently so the furniture does not really fit the space. I would like to keep the sofa if possible. It is a standard shape with rounded arms and very comfortable. It is a 2 and 1/2 seater approx 5ft 8in long and 3ft high. In an ideal world I'd like 1920s 30s or mid century scandanavian. But would also like to keep the sofa. The only thing I can think of doing is put the sofa facing the fire and take it from there. What about a window seat which would also provide storage? If the sofa faces the fire what do I do with the rest of the room? Chair angled at small window... ottoman??? As for colours the room is painted chalk white. When you come in the front door ( 1930s with coloured glass) there is a curved polished plaster wall in burnt umber. So am thinking moss green, mustard i.e autumn colours a la Orla Kiely??? I would suggest going for a warm brown tone that doesn’t contrast too sharply with the darkness of your sofas. White can feel a bit stark and is rarely relaxing—while it does look clean and reflects light, making the space feel more spacious, it often lacks character.

*Tip: Before choosing a colour, order samples and paint them onto A4 sheets of paper. Tape these to the wall and observe how the colour changes throughout the day in natural light, as well as under artificial lighting in the evening. Everyone sees colours differently, there is no right or wrong answer, its just about personal preference.
When arranging cushions, avoid placing them in a diamond shape, it can make almost any interior look less refined and exclusive. Scandinavian design thrives on fabrics that evoke “warm winter nights”—think layering different textures like bouclé, linen, cotton, and wool, as well as knitted patterns.
A neutral-toned rug would also work beautifully, adding softness and comfort. Nordic Knots have some excellent, reasonably priced options worth exploring.
