botch job on decking - what can I do?

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I had an area of decking which was rotten and paid a Joiner whom was recommended to me £3k cash to repair the area. I was away a couple of days when they were doing the job and I’ve returned and it’s awful - the joists underneath aren’t straight; don’t look very secure and to cap it off this is how they have done the decking boards. I’m sure the boards are the same size, but the older ones have shrunk slightly but they’re not lined up. I’ve tried contact them but they’re just ignoring me. Any suggestions how I could at least hide this or make it less apparent?

It looks to me that replacing this whole deck (given it is both large and raised) would have far exceeded the £3000 budget so it‘s only realistic to expect a repair.

But it’s not clear how this is a £3000 job. Have they done significant strengthening underneath that we can’t see on these pictures?

You mentioned joists…… are you using the term correctly?- joists are the structural timbers underneath- its reasonable to expect them to be even spaced on a brand new construction but this is not brand new and it may not have been possible to set new joists evenly.

The picture shows uneven deck boards. I would have expected them to take up all of the boards on that section and then either replace everything or lay it in an aesthetically pleasing way such as a change of direction for the new boards or at the very least alternate lines of old and new.

So I think you need to inspect further, establish if there was additional work that was not shown on the surface and assure yourself that the structure is solid and safe.

When you know how much work has actually been done you can better assess if you have had been ripped off or if you have had your monies worth but don't like their attention to detail.

Having paid cash in hand you may struggle to get them back or to pursue them. If you cant get them back staining the deck will help disguise the uneven join

I've attached the closeup of the counter, will look into changing the handles just to give the cabinets a lift. @Dannielle Lyn... I personally like the kitchen, kind of a Scandinavian modern look. leave the skirts, doors and trims as is. Paint wise, I am going to invite you to a kitchen gallery that I think works well with the existing aesthetic you have now. I like the "Melrose Kitchen" in this instance, as an example of wall color. The trim is painted here, but leaving yours as is, I believe, would be fine! Happy Houzzing.

I'm pretty sure they will have been put in to provide a non-combustable zone behind and around the stove. We are about to install a wood burning stove and the installation instructions specify an area that needs to be heat resistant. Removing or even painting them behind the stove would be difficult and potentially dangerous. I would either paint the rest of the chimney breast a dark green to reduce the impact of the tiles, or add a fire surround (checking with the manufacturer or a reputable installer about clearance) and some painted tongue and groove cladding over the chimney breast depending on your preferred style.

I have just bought my first home and have had 3 jobs done so far. I have felt totally overwhelmed and unprepared for the questions I was asked and decisions I had to make, so hoping I can get some advice before the nest job! I am single without anyone who I can really ask for help so apologies if these are stupid questions! Kitchen Makeover; the kitchen is fine but not to my taste. I want to remove the wall units and put in shelves, remove the wall tiles and re-tile, lay new floor, spray the cabinets, replace the counter tops and sink. The thing is I don't know what order to do it in. My guess: Remove wall units Re-tile/paint Respray cabinets Replace counter tops & sink Lay floor If anyone can let me know if I am on the right track that would be great. Thank you!

It doesn’t look too bad, but I think staining the whole deck may make it look more even. Only probably with deck stain is it starts to flake off after a while so can cause more issues. Also the old bit of deck will start to deteriorate within a few years before the new bit does. I personally would have had the whole deck replaced and I do agree that £3000 seems an awful lot of money. Was that price labour or labour and supply? I had a post a few years ago where I stained my decking and within a few weeks it started to fade and flake. In the end I had it taken up and had porcelain tiles laid which are very hardwearing. I can’t remember the exact cost but I think it was about £1000 but of course it was a much smaller deck. Below is my faded deck and the new porcelain paving.
