It looks a nice private area. A nice courtyard feel with large plants to make a statement. I would use a fine gravel similar colour to the paving for the central area where you could have a small bistro table and a couple of chairs.

If I were to use pots, what colors would you have gone for please?

Biggest pots possible, the bigger the better and I think I would be brave and go for black.

This will show off the green foliage better and make it pop as well as any hot colours you plant with it, i.e. have a large specimen plant as the focal point of the pot either centrally or to the back if the pot is on a boundary and add fillers like ferns, heucheras or hostas and then a splash of colour like Dahlias or Hemerocallis.

I think for the pots I will be playing with the shapes also (tall,wide,deep pots) and styles (modern and traditional) to be able to cover all the fenceand create some visual interest??
