We’ve just had new windows fitted and there is a lot expanding foam around the edges. The old windows fitted perfectly - are these too small or is it normal to have this much of a gap between the edge of the frame and the reveal?
Your windows should have been secured with frame fixing screws directly into the brickwork. This secures the windows. It is normal for some tolerance allowance around a window frame to allow for the building being out of plumb. Your original windows will have been fitted when the house was constructed and as timber is easily adjusted on site, they would fit snuggly.
UPVC windows need room for expansion as the material will move during hotter weather and contract slightly in colder weather. The amount of space does seem to be on the wide side. You should check the installee details signed at acceptance/confirmation as it should include their measuring tolerances.
They may fit a cover strip to hide the gap, which should avoid decorative problems in individual rooms.
Communicate with them and tell them your dissatisfaction with the installation. If you have a final payment you could withhold it until you are satisfied with the installation.
